culture shock

crayons (1) Have you opened a box of Crayola crayons recently?

I did and was amazed at that different names they have for several different crayons these days...like "macaroni and cheese"? WT?

Um, I've never had macaroni and cheese growing up so I was not familiar with that fake orange color...

crayons (2) And "robin's egg blue"...we don't have robins in Hawaii, so I've never seen their eggs either...

crayons And "tickle me pink" sounds more like a nail polish name than a crayon, don't you think?

My thing is when kids go to school to learn names of colors, are these color names used? I can't see myself asking a friend to borrow their "macaroni and cheese" crayon...I know times have changed but these crayon names seem kinda unusual to me.

So funny! I haven't looked at a box of crayons in forever.

Is Robin's Egg Blue like a Tiffany blue?

Those are strictly colors that Crayola "develops" to try and get you to buy their crayons over the competition. Some times the names are changed but not very often and depending on the names and changes can some times cause controversy. I don't know if they still have it but I remember a peachy colored crayon as a kid that was called "flesh". Even as a child I was smart enough to recognize that "flesh" was a pretty strange name for a crayon color. Generally concord grapes exist in only one shade of purple so to call a color "Concord Grape" makes sense but there are so many diverse skin colors throughout the world. I didn't understand what gave Crayola the right to condense those diversities down to one color choice? Anyway, I'd be surprised if that color still exists under that name since it is so insensitive to other cultures. I think that Crayola has an archive of all of their color names past and present on their website so if you get curious you should check it out.

NO< I don't think I've opened up a crayon anything since I was, 10 maybe, too bad colored pencils to come with fab names.

Names look interesting and fun but not how I'd want kids learning names of different colours. We already have correct names for different colours and shades of colours so why not use them.

Hmmm... I wonder if they still have Burnt Sienna? For some reason that one always stuck in my mind. ;-)
