My husband said that they had bread but not fried bread. I think age pan is different from malasadas. However, there was a word with "age pan" in it (can't read kanji) and I realized the Japanese have had something similar for ages. I can't remember the name of it, but in the 70s, the standard Japanese school lunch (not the homemade bento), included an elongated fried donut generously sprinkled with sugar.
