fun fun lu rou fan

Been wanting to try Fun Fun Lu Rou Fan ever since seeing them featured on a televison program called "7 Rule".

Finally got to try them Saturday.

I ordered their Konrohan...1458 yen (tax included).

The konro which I’m assuming means kakuni (braised pork belly) in Taiwanese was so tender it melted in my mouth. Han means rice. It also came with tender bamboo shoots, ajitama and pickled mustard cabbage.

I want to go back to try their Lu Rou Fan.

nisokuhokou coffee roasters

Saturday, we went to Sangenchaya.

I think the last time we were in this area was when we first moved to Tokyo, and then the pandemic happened…

We had lunch at Nisokuhokou Coffee Roasters.

Nisokuhokou means walking on two legs.

They are related to 365 nichi which I've written about here.

On the ground floor is the bakery, Junibun Bakery, which sells breads as well as cakes.

According to the cashier, during the week, you can buy things from here and take them upstairs to (Nisokuhokou CR) to eat.

Before being seated in the cafe, you need to order.

I chose the French Toast...1760 yen (tax included).

This came with 3 tiny side dishes (ratatouille, pickled beets and rice salad). It also came with some cauliflower potage and bacon with the french toast.

I think they soak the bread in coffee because the french toast had a distinct coffee flavor…love!

Satoshi chose the Nisoku Burger...1485 yen (tax included).

His burger looked good especially with all those veggies.

Both plates came with coffee or tea.

Satoshi chose hot coffee while I opted for iced.

We enjoyed this cafe and look forward to coming here again when we are in the area.

Made Jalna's sister's recipe for Chicken Anchovy Olio.

We ate it with veggies instead of pasta.

I cooked the veggies first, then the chicken, made the sauce then tossed everything in it.

Was ono.

kyoto day 2

The next day we had breakfast at our hotel’s buffet.

I loved how you could choose your own plate designs/colors.

That bowl in the top right hand corner had tofu that was made in balloons, prick it with a toothpick to release the tofu into your bowl.

I've had custard made like this in balloons before, but never tofu, tasty!

I thought the buffet had a nice assortment of Japanese foods.

Luckily Satoshi didn’t over eat!

After checking out we met up with BIL, SIL and niece, who drove us to the temple where the family grave is.

Nephew and his family met us at the temple.

After cleaning and putting some flowers, not to mention totally sweating bullets, we went to have lunch.

On the way to the restaurant, we stopped at Nishidaya, which we've tried before, to pick up some tsukemono (pickles) to bring home with us.

 

Lunch was at Aioi, which is just around the corner from MIL’s.

I had the hiyashi somen, while everyone else ordered 2 entrees each!

Then to keep cool until our train back to Tokyo, we went to Royal Host.

I had this caramel ice cream coffee jelly (gelatin) parfait.

Satoshi had ice cream.

Even though BIL, SIL & niece had 2 entrees each at Aioi, they also ate parfaits, pancakes & a club house sandwich!

It was good that we were able to visit the family grave and spend some time with BIL and his family.

I also brought back 2 plates from MIL’s, these were quite heavy!

Not sure what BIL plans to do with MIL's house, I thought BIL and Satoshi were going to have "the talk" but it didn't happen.

For now, Satoshi's "stuff" is safe at MIL's.

the hotel we stayed at, Via Inn Kyoto, had beautifully etched walls in the lobby, this wall was sakura (cherry blossoms), the other wall across the room was momiji (maple leaves)

We had dinner at Yamamoto Mambo, which is supposedly popular for Kyoto style Okonomiyaki.

I had seen them featured on a telelvision show and marked it for us to try.

Too bad their portions were so teeny! 600 yen (tax included)

And their okonomiyaki was burnt! and even if the photo might look like the okonomiyaki is big, the portion again was so teeny, like only an 8-inch circle....1200 yen (tax included)

This is supposed to be their okonomiyaki with everything in it, unfortunately there was more noodles than anything else in it.

We won't be back.

Even if it was super humid and blazing, we did see this line for ramen.

There are two shops next to each other Shinpuku Saikan and Honke Daiichi Asahi.

Satoshi says these ramen shops have been around for forever and that he likes Honke Daiichi better, and the line proves this...

Nana's Green Tea's Matcha tea soda was super refreshing.

Satoshi had their matcha soft serve.

And then before returning to our hotel, we checked out Hen na Hotel (Weird/Odd Hotel)

Add another 7089 steps to the 11084 steps before dinner...it was a long, hot day

After getting the futon wrapped and ready to go and waiting for the taxi to come, I ran across to pick up some doughnuts from Kamo Donuts, which we get whenever we are here...krueller sprinkles, chocolate nuts, chocolate and salted lemon.

After sending off our futons and other items, we went in search of lunch.

Nearby the takkyubin (home delivery) center, was Uosei.

I ordered the C set...udon, sushi and tempura bits for the udon...750 yen (tax included)

Satoshi had their udon set which came with udon, sushi and several small side dishes...1080 yen (tax included)

It was a bit too hot to eat hot udon, but it was nice to be out of the sun for a bit. 

And then Satoshi wanted to check out the Manga Museum, so we rode the bus and got off at Nijo Station.

Then walked across town.

Clamp Coffee Sarasa...I had this place bookmarked and look forward to checking it out next time.

We did stop at Cafe Tyrol...which I've had bookmarked for some time.

The curry smelled wonderful, but since we had already eaten...

we had ginger ale and cream (melon) soda floats instead ...680 yen (tax included) each.

I want to return here for breakfast or lunch!

The manga museum houses all sorts of Japanese manga.

We also prayed for prosperity at Mikane Shrine.

And found a shady spot under a wisteria tree near Avanti shopping mall to eat our donuts.

It was so blazing and humid and blah!

We walked a lot and also ate a lot too.

futon

One thing we wanted from MIL’s was the futon that we used whenever we slept over at her house. 

It is older (and heavier) than what we have but it is in better condition than what we have.

Since we were getting together with BIL and fam on Saturday, we went to Kyoto (really) early on Friday, packed up the futon and called the takkyubin (home delivery) guy to see if he could pick them up for delivery.

He could but it would be sometime late in the afternoon!

Since MIL’s water is turned off, staying and waiting around for the guy would be out of the question especially with no access to a toilet!

The futon would also need to meet the size that they accept, so we had to wrap it with tape to make it the right size

So we called for a taxi and asked the guy to drop us off with the futons, a couple of Satoshi’s bats & Kat’s Mount Fuji climbing stick at the takkyubin service center.

The futons, climbing stick and bats were delivered Sunday.

You should have seen the takkyubin guy carry both futon bags up at once!

The futon bags took up our entrance! (see the photo above)

This was the space I made for the futon in our other room.

Since we brought in the plants before going to Kyoto, for the upcoming typhoons, we don't have much space left in this room...

Hopefully I can rearrange our "stuff" and get rid of some other “stuff” to clean things up in the coming days.

Oh and the plants should be going back outside soon too.
