b.l.t.

Recently, Nate of Hwnpake in Okinawa, sent me a care package (Thank you!) Inside was a package of BACON, mayo, egg noodles, wafers, lots of szechuan peppercorns, seasoned salts and haw flakes.

So, the other day for lunch, Satoshi and I had B.L.T.s, though you can't see the bacon, it was super crispy and delicious! (If there is one thing that I can't find on mainland Japan, it is crispy bacon. Though you'd know that already if you've been reading this blog.)

I also hadn't had haw flakes in ages to the point where I had forgotten how they tasted. Still it was nice to receive all those goodies.

Thanks Nate you really made my day!

Have a nice weekend everyone!

  4. It said to refrigerate after opening, so that's what I did. It is super easy to prepare, just stick in the micro for couple seconds and it comes out really crispy. Thanks Nate!

  8. There should be some kind of international law to carry crispy bacon, Chad, don't you think?

Rowena & Laura, I used to buy them from the crack seed store, maybe I was the only one?

    Take care!

  9. Shan zha

Edible fruit of Chinese hawthorn, Crataegus pinnatifida, is product of Shandung, China. Also called red fruit & harvested in months of Sep & Oct. From Shandung is sent dried & exported to all China. In southern China is processed into 3 forms, round, thin candied disks, Shan Zha Bing; square cakes, Shan Zha Gao; & sauce, Shan Zha Jiang.

Flat dark red disks called Shan Zha Bing are most popular probably because of easy handling & can be used as candy while traveling or to keep little children quiet & occupied. As child, remember were readily available throughout SE Asia & Hong Kong.

See now in Chinese markets in U.S. According to ''Basic Classification of Herbs'', antiquated book of Chinese Medicine, extract functions as coronary vasodilator & is believed to help dissolve deposits in arteries as well as help digestion & reduce development of phlegm

  13. I don't eat bacon, but I believe you can buy "real American style" bacon in Costco Japan. It is called "Farmer John's Bacon" or something like that. :)
