I thought I had cleared out all of my backposts, but I found several more.
Last month, Satoshi and I were in downtown Osaka. We were on our way to look for a curry shop, but it began to drizzle. Since Satoshi didn't bring an umbrella, we decided to pop in for lunch at Sandaya Souhonke.
Apparently this is a franchise and only in Osaka. We were ahead of the lunch crowd and were very happy and sad to find this place empty. Happy because we had the place all to ourselves, sad because we wondered if it was any good. (Usually if there is a line, you know it will be good, but without a line or customers, it was kind of iffy.)
Satoshi ordered the Kurogewagyu (black haired Japanese beef) curry with nasubi (eggplant) and broccoli--750 yen (about US$7.50). He was a bit disappointed with this one..."where's the beef?" he asked.
I ordered the Sandaya Tokusei soup curry 940 yen (about US$9.40). Actually the price was 880 yen but I wanted my rice to be a genmai (brown rice) blend, so they added 50 yen to the price. I enjoyed this.
There were chunks of meat plus chunky veggies in a temperature hot soup that starts off a bit sweet and then the heat kicks in. The heat from the soup and spiciness made my nose run! I wasn't too sure why there was a lemon on my rice, but I did squeeze it onto my rice and it actually made the spices a bit milder when eaten together.
I think if we want to eat curry in this area, we would definitely go back.

Looks good...did that soup version taste any different from typical Japanese curry?
ReplyDeleteIt was a great dish, Lori. I think it tasted a little different from the typical Japanese curry, though I can't pinpoint why. It had more "stuff" in it than the typical Japanese curry for sure :)
ReplyDeleteTake care.

ReplyDeleteThanks Jann, sometimes I wish we had more of the eateries that the States have :)
