foodie tuesday

Tuesday morning I had my regular 3 month dental appointment.

Not wanting to go straight home afterwards, I caught the subway and wandered around Shinsaibashi.

In Daimaru was Debailleul, a belgian chocolatier. Of course when I saw these macaron, I had to get them. There were only 3 flavors, chocolat, cafe & citron. I was also surprised the person behind the counter gave me a little taste. Most places do not let you taste macaron.

Only thing was, they weren't the usual macaron. These are called Brizou Glace--a combination of the words bizou (kiss) + Brussels + glace = frozen Belgian kisses? The reason these were different was that you put them in the freezer, then take them out about 5 minutes before eating. The semi-glace (partly frozen) texture was like eating ice cream! The outside was a bit chewy. Yum.

Then I walked next door to Sogo. They have 2 food floors--1 for fresh foods and 1 just for sweets (both floors are huge!).

At one counter was Floresta, they are relatively new. They say they have the "nature donut" because they use mostly organic ingredients. But it is still fried, so the calories are unfortunately still there.

I bought the earl grey, chocolate and coconut chocolate. I halved them all so I could try each one (of course!) and gave the other halves to Satoshi. My favorite was the earl grey. Satoshi's was chocolate.

I first heard about Moisan from David Lebovitz's blog. This bakery is organic and the only one in Japan, the rest of the shops are in France.

I bought the ficelle apertif (with lots of white sesame seeds and poppy seeds), a pizza like bread with lardon (bacon fat & salted pork) & mini pomme (mini apple).

Again, like Le Sucre-Coeur, you have to talk to the person behind the counter and tell them what you want. I like that, more places should operate like this.

I had the pizza like bread for lunch yesterday, it was delicious and chewy and the mini pomme, flaky.

I had part of the ficelle this morning for breakfast. Nuttiness from the sesame seeds and poppy seeds, crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside...delicious.

It was a delicious Tuesday.

  6. Hi there,

as always thanks for the heads up on all the yummy looking food.

I saw Debailleul on Paris Breakfast. Glad to know I now don't have to go to Brussels to get their products as they're just down the road in Osaka.

BTW what are you doing going to the dentist every 3 months?

  8. I have heard great things about Moisan. Unfortunately, we don't have it here in the third world.

I've tried "nature donut" not so long ago but, they didn't have earl grey. I'd love to try it. =)

  13. Hi there,

after writing my previous comment I checked and saw you said Debailleul in Daimaru not Sogo.

As you know we have Daimaru here in Kyoto so I visited and found the Debailleul stand and asked for some 'burizu'-2 of each of the chocolate, citrus and coffee.

The clerk was very friendly-all smiles-and gave me a sample. It was delish.

I asked for her recommendations for the chocolate and was offered an 'oranjetto' (spelling?) (-the chocolate covered orange peel) sample too.

    Super service.

Will definitely go back to try the chocolate.

Thanks again for the heads up.

  14. Tamakikat,

    Boy, you are fast!
Glad you were able to try the brizou & orangette. I tried the orangette awhile back. They also had pamplemousse (grapefruit) peel and citron peel too. Delish.

    Take care.

  15. Oh Kat! I am so jealous! I fondly remember the food floors of the Japanese department stores on our trip to japan for our honeymoon. :) Just walking around was a treat to see all the goodies available. I miss that a lot! Shirokiya and Marukai (though great) are sadly lacking in selection or breadth as those department stores!

  18. I miss the Japanese department stores too! I used pray no one insisted on taking me to dinner every night when I visited for work--mainly so I could hit the stores on my way back to the hotel and try everything. Your post made me so hungry! What a great selection of goodies and a fun day. I need a Tuesday like that (well my mind does anyway--not the body so much!)
    ;-)

  19. If the department food prices weren't so different (higher) from the supermarket prices, I would be there everyday, Deb :) You are right though, these "foodiedays" are not too good for the body.

    Take care.
