I've noticed that a lot of people here do not think outside of the box. They follow the manuals and are flustered when the situation changes and have to think for themselves.
Awhile back, Satoshi and I were in a cafe. The waitress came to take our order. I ordered an iced tea with lemon. She said, "okay, do you want it hot or iced?" I repeated that I wanted an iced tea with lemon. She then asked, "do you want milk or lemon with that?" Satoshi at that point was quite snippy with the waitress and repeated that I wanted an iced tea with lemon.
Then there were the time at the convenience store, I wanted 20 yen stamps. The guy at the register said, "I only have 10 yen stamps". I said to the guy, "well, can't I purchase 2?" He replied, "oh..."
The girl at the bakery. I bought a sandwich and asked for them to put a sticker on it . (Putting a sticker on things indicates that you don't want a package for the item.) After she puts the sticker onto the sandwich, she asks me, "do you want a package for it?"....
The check-out at the supermarket. I put my own shopping bag into my basket. After ringing up all of my items and placing my items and shopping bag into another basket. The girl asks me, "do you need a shopping bag?" I told her, "no, I brought my own." She then came across the sandwich that I bought (in the example above). She says to me, "we don't sell these." I told her, "I know, I bought it from the bakery."
The guy at the post office. I had a little package which fits stamps. I brought it to put the new stamps that I was purchasing into. The guy threw it away and put what I bought into a huge plastic package. I think if most of these people had to pay for the package that they give out, they wouldn't and would think more about the environment....or maybe not.
Have I made you all laugh? I was rolling my eyes as I was recounting all of this...
Hope you all have a great week.
Kat-I was taking a break from my studies and read your blog. Too funny!
ReplyDeleteThe little game I play sometimes play with cashiers is I give them unusual change combinations. For example, if my total is $1.86, I give them $2.11 and it totally throws them off. Until they punch the value into the register (which calculates the change for them) they are confused and try to return my $0.11.
Good morning Kat,
ReplyDeletethese accounts certainly made me chuckle.

That is so funny, Genki.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I made you laugh Hello Sweety.
Take care you two.

It's like when I go through the McDonald's drive-through. I ask for "1 sausage/egg McMuffin - sandwich only" and they reply "You want the set?" I have to repeat "No - sandwich only!" Everytime!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think sometimes people's jobs are so monotonous that they put their brains on auto-pilot.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite, which I've only gotten twice (thank goodness) is when I request something with non-fat milk and the server will say, "We only have skim." One server even tried to convince me that non-fat milk and skim were too different types of milk. I decided it was useless to argue with someone going on that mentality and went with her "suggestion." I hope it made her day!
Very funny! When I used to travel to Tokyo the plane got in late and I would often end up at at McDonald's that was by the hotel for easy food. It amazed me that I would get a bigger bag and inside was the burger in another little bag, the fries in their bag were inside another little bag, the drink was in a small bag and there was a bag that had the ketchup packages and napkins in it. Such waste! (But it was all neat and folded!) I didn't know about the sticker thing for packaging then--but maybe that would not have helped anyway!?!
ReplyDeleteSad yeah, Nate?? once in Hawaii my friend ordered a hamburger @ burgerking and the worker asked if he wanted the bun too??
ReplyDeleteShe must be bragging that her customer followed her "suggestion", Jenster ;)
The McD's here still double package everything, Deb, the sticker thingy only started recently to help the environment.
Take care everyone.
Kat

Seems an issue world wide, or perhaps the ability or lack there of to look outside the box may have infiltrated NZ via the Sister City program, as you mention Sakai is the sister city for Wellington and Kyoto is the Sister City for Auckland.
ReplyDeleteWe're doomed.
The boxes have us.
I guess we are all doomed, Greymadness.

I found your blog off the "notable blog" thing, and this brings back so many memories of when I lived in Japan (Osaka) for a year. My two favorite stories:
ReplyDeleteI went into a Wendy's and ordered a value meal. I wanted to replace the drink with a mini-frosty. When I asked them to do it, they were adament that it wasn't possible no matter how hard I reasoned. Sooo I had to order everthing seperately...for EXACTLY the same price as the value meal.
Second: a friend of mine went to a cafe and they sold a ham sandwich and a cheese sadnwich. She reasoned that with both ingredients, she could ask them to put cheese on the ham sandwich, but they told her it wasn't on the menu. Arguing ensued, but eventually she had to order BOTH a ham and a cheese sandwich and put it on herself.
very good examples, Lobbie.
ReplyDeleteTake care.

K and S,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your collection. :). I was bit sad before reading it but feeling very relax now as it is funny stuff. But i always think OUT of the box. You can only think outside the box ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT IS IN THE BOX.
