What did you eat for Christmas dinner?
Since I was meeting my friend for coffee (which actually turned out to meeting for lunch), I went to the market in the morning to look for something for dinner.
The "western" type foods were expensive (chicken still super expensive), but sushi was cheap! 9 pieces for 580 yen (about US$5.80). And if you bought the 18 piece pack it was only 1080 yen (about US$10.80).
(By the way, they already jacked up the price for colored kamaboko for New Years...sigh, I knew I should've tried to buy it earlier...about 800 yen (about US$8) for a little slab, maybe we won't eat any this New Years)
I also bought some spinach mixed with sesame seeds called goma-ae (literally coated with sesame)...198 yen (about US$1.98)
And I made some fragrant chickpea salad, because I found this bambucha (huge) New Zealand red bell pepper for 198 yen (about US$1.98).
Total cost for our Christmas dinner...1476 yen (about US$14.76), not bad, don't you think?
What did you enjoy for your Christmas dinner?
We had a (bought) roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, yorkshire pudding, gravy, salad, mushrooms in creme fraiche sauce (from a can, but so incredibly good). Later on we had Christmas Pudding with cream. I bought the pudding in an import food store.
ReplyDeleteIt was really good. :-) I hope other people answer, I love to hear what people eat to celebrate events.
I always admire the sushi section at the supermarket because everything looks so perfect, but....never again! We bought some once and the rice was so dry and hard! And at the fish shop where we often buy seafood, there was packaged sushi in the frozen section!
ReplyDeleteI like your xmas dinner way better than mine....reminds me of the islands. ;-)
Yummy sushi! That's one big pepper! We just got up and will be meeting my parents for breakfast here. I keep forgetting Japan is one day ahead. We went to Genki for Christmas eve dinner...I think I ate something with gluten. I'll be extra careful today. Oh for dinner we're planning to have sweet potatoes, tako and sweet potato leaves. My mom is making fish. Have a good one!
ReplyDeleteEnjoying your photographs and your menu for dinner. We have not yet eaten but will be having prime rib and cherry pie as the main attractions. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteGood blog.
ReplyDeletePortugal
I've never tried Yorkshire pudding Helen, it sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteooh hard rice is not a good thing, Rowena :(

Happy Holidays Portugal!

Kat
Merry Christmas, Kat and Satoshi! We had roast pork belly with mashed potatoes and tiramisu for dessert.
ReplyDeleteSushi sounds gorgeous but it's just a little too cold for it here!
Hi there Kat,
ReplyDeletelooks like we had some of the same thing.
I made a salsa with various ingredients including a RED, yellow, and green bell pepper-each NZ $1.98 by the way (=130 yen).
We also had roast ham, smoked salmon (-done at home), 4 other salads, yummy breads, and wine.
Dessert was a little bit of the following: a coconut cheesecake, apassion fruit cheesecake, a trifle, a fresh fruit salad; and a Christmas rum ball.
Delish!
TK
Oh it is cold here too Su-Lin, but sushi was just too tempting to pass over, the price for roasted chicken was just too expensive!
ReplyDeleteOoh your dinner sounds lovely TK! Pictures please!!
Take care you two.
Kat
Merry Christmas Kat! That sushi was a bargain, and looked really good.
ReplyDeleteWe ate way too much, Kat! I hope you're doing really well and wishing you all the best in 2010!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kirk, the price surprised me also :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ivonne, wishing you all the best in 2010 too!
Take care you two.
Kat
Hi!
ReplyDeleteWow, that sushi looks amazing and at such a great price.
My mom made prime rib (insanely delish), mashed potatoes, ceasar salad, and sherry nutmeg pound cake served with french vanilla ice cream (for dessert).
Your sushi looks wonderful. I liked reading all the comments on what people had to eat for Christmas. We had prime rib, chicken, and crab lets.
ReplyDeleteThe sushi section of US grocery stores are so overpriced - 6 small pieces of not very good and very dry sushi is maybe $5 or $6? for something that isn't all veggies - for something premium its even higher. Crazy!!
ReplyDeleteBut the restaurant prices are even higher that that. I guess it evens out because chickens are reasonable!
Tracy
that does sound delish, Biologie!
ReplyDeletemmm Jalna :)
okay Tracy, we are even then, you guys for the chickens, us for the sushi ;)
Take care everyone!
Kat
In good Aussie tradition, we had fresh cold prawns and salad. Yum! When living in Japan, Christmas dinner would always be something like Indonesian or Mexican :)
ReplyDeleteboth traditions sound delicous Melanie!
ReplyDeleteTake care.
