pizzeria pancia piena

I am not sure when I first heard about Pizzeria Pancia Piena, but my blog friend, Rona, highly recommended it.

We tried 2 times to eat there. But on the weekends, the wait was crazy long.

The shop is small, with only about 12 to 15 seats.

Of course the item taking up most of the space is...the pizza oven, wood burning, of course.

This pizzeria is Neapolitan style and is certified by the Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN).

During lunchtime, you can order a pizza set (pizza, salad & drink) or pasta set (pasta, salad & drink).

The pizza set is based on the price of the pizza you choose. I think the pasta set runs the same way too.

I think you could also order a la carte, but we decided to try the pizza set, since the price of the pizza covers the price of the salad and drink.

We chose the Pizza D.O.C. which I feel is a traditional pizza--buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, parmigiano & basilico....2200 yen (about US$22)

We loved this! The cheese was so buttery and the tomatoes so sweet.

Our second pizza was the margherita con rughetta (tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmigiano, basilico & ruccola)...1700 yen (about US$17)

This was good too. Everything was really fresh not overly salty like those take-out type pizzas.

We were talking about the two pizzas and agree that the "no tomato sauce" version (D.O.C.) was an overall better pizza.

For our drinks, we chose coffee. This shop uses Caffe Passalacqua, which is a Neapolitan coffee brand. Satoshi didn't particularly like the coffee but I thought it wasn't too bad. Though I wish they wouldn't have it pre-brewed and sitting around in their coffee pot.

It was a great lunch, and we felt like we had gone to Italy! especially seeing this cute FIAT 500 (which I found out by surfing around the web!) on our way to lunch. (fun that there was a huge truck in the back to show the size of this car!)

Ooh and the name "pancia piena" apparently means "full belly", which is definitely what we left with.

Thanks for the great recommendation Rona! (hope I didn't make you too "homesick" with this post...)

  1. It just made me a little homesick--it's a good thing I'm not craving Neapolitan-style pizza! Otherwise this post would make me cry, too!

We had some kind of cream-based topping that was surprisingly good, albeit very rich. But the chile-infused olive oil (you have to ask for it, and they'll give it to you in a little cup) cuts through that richness nicely!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope you can do a taste test between this place and Fontegara one day. I'd love to hear which one you prefer!

  3. Such a coincidence that you should mention this, because one of the things I've been wanting to do is to visit pizzerias that are listed in a website called pizzeriadoc.it - I guess my diet isn't gonna last that long...
