ukeian

Another item we found in Kanazawa were sweets made from the eggs of the ukkokei (silkie bantam).

This chicken's feathers are supposed to feel silky which is why they are named such and its eggs are supposedly the top rank in Japan.

The egg yolks are so rich and dense that you can pick them up whole with chopsticks!

We got the slice of castella (sponge cake) 242 yen (about US$2.42) each.

This was rich, not too sweet...mmm!

And the custard pudding...420 yen (about US$4.20) each.

Again, rich and delicious.

I can see why the eggs and chicken are prized in Japan.

  2. Gourmet eggs is what I'm thinking. Are they easy to find at the supermarket or is this only a specialty item at high end grocers? I wanna raise ukkokei in my yard!

    Nah they don't sell the eggs in the markets, I think you gotta go to the source (the farm) to get them Rowena, and be prepared to pay about US$35 for 10!

  8. I just went to a house last week that had some nice chickens in the garden. The Realtor showed us the various eggs the different chickens laid. I wish I took a picture of the eggs! Here's my picture of the fancy rooster. http://picplz.com/VwN.jpg

  10. A new store has opened in our shopping mall. It reminds me of a little pastry shop near my hotel in Tokyo. You have a tray and tongs and go along the line serving yourself and they parcel it up at the end. Just into a bag, not like in Tokyo where they wrapped it beautifully with a ribbon. Today I bought some white custard that came in little glass jars. I wanted the jars more than the food.
