hawaii remembers

What kinds of things did you have for breakfast growing up?

We were lucky because on weekends Mom used to make all sorts of things for my brother and I.

One dish in particular was her peanut butter french toast.

Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. (Jelly preferably guava.)

Dip into milk and egg mixture as you normally would french toast and cook with butter.

The version we had recently was different from "small kid times" (childhood) because my mom doesn't buy Love's white bread anymore, only whole wheat bread.

Another nostalgic breakfast is portuguese sausage, eggs and rice.

The spiciness and texture of portuguese sausage is something that cannot be found in Japan, though some chorizo can come quite close.

The egg has to be sunny side up or over easy...anything that will ooze over the plate, picking up some of the "juices" from the sausage, and soaking into the rice.

(Don't forget some ketchup on the eggs.)

Nowadays though, mom "fries" the sausage in the oven without having to stand by the stove (gets out a lot of oil too).

Looking back on the foods we eat nowadays, they have changed considerably from when we were growing up, but the tastes and memories have not.

    Coming from a Southern state in the US, probably one of the most unique things I'd eat in the morning was hot cornbread in milk.

    The cornbread we made was sweeter than say Mexican cornbread and so it was the perfect breakfast food. We'd break it into pieces and pour milk over it like a cereal. So yummy~

  2. I loved the home fried potatoes my dad would make me for breakfast. It's sliced thin on a mandolin and fried with crispy edges (like soggy potato chips?, kind of). You don't see them in restaurants anymore I'm not sure why. Even when it's listed as so it usually turns out to be country fried potatoes (cubes with rosemary).. Anyway thanks for the great post!

  3. Ooh, this is a great polling question -- ketchup on scrambled eggs of course and *always* guava jelly! I also have fond memories of huli-huli chicken and Portuguese sausages :) [Thanks for the memories too!]

  6. mhmmm guava jelly, my mom makes it & still do, i think its one of the food items i had while growing up! & i just came back from hawaii, wish i was still there right now!

  11. I don't think I've tried Swedish pancakes before Debinhawaii, they sound nice!

    Actually I made these for my brother and me Jalna, but it brought back lots of memories :)

  12. While the fried meat, egg and rice items were the norm, I have to say that the hands down favorites between my brothers and I were Corn Pops, Cocoa Rice Krispies and Frosted Cornflakes. Remember the variety pack with assorted flavors? My mom actually never bought those, but our grandpa spoiled us rotten. The one nobody ever wanted was Lucky Charms. Just never liked that leprechaun dude.

    Ha! My mom never bought us though either Rowena, though I liked Lucky Charms because of all the hard colored marshmallows in them.

  15. That PB&J French toast sounds amazing - I definitely want to try that next time I make French toast! I love the sound of the sausage, egg and rice for breakfast too though it's quite involved for the morning!

    My breakfast would just be milk and coffee growing up!
