oyaji curry

Last month on a weekday, when Satoshi had the day off, we checked out Oyaji Curry.

A tiny shop with 10 seats run by a guy and his father. "Oyaji" is the slang for "Dad", kinda like calling your dad "Pops" but literally means "old man".

You should know that the slang for "Mom" is "Ofukuro" which literally means "old bag" (rude, yeah??)

Anyway, I found this place by walking in the area once and made note that we should check it out.

They make their curry from scratch and you add toppings to it.

Satoshi chose the Oyaji Special, this had some katsu (cutlet), cheese, eggplant and the curry over rice...This was huge!

I chose the cheese curry. (sorry I don't remember the prices!)

Their curry is delicious, with a slight heat that slowly works it way. You can also choose the level of heat that you want. Both of us went with mild.

If you eat there on a weekday, they give you a small salad too.

I loved the homemade pickles that came with the curry really puckery.

I would definitely eat here again when we're in the area.

  3. Hahaha, "Ofukuro" . . . I'm surprised. It's so unJapanesey to be disrespectful.

  6. Hi Kat! The curry looks so yummy! So you got me curious and I checked why it's called Ofukuro. The word Ofukuro has been around since 1336 (Muromachi Period) and mom used to carry a bag that holds money and valuables. So that's one theory. Still kinda weird to call Ofukuro...

  11. Sad, it's been far too long since I've had Japanese curry!! I eat Thai curries most of the time, which are lovely, but not the same thing at all! :)
