hanabira mochi

There is an interesting mochi during this time of year called Hanabira mochi.

Hanabira literally means flower petal.

White mochi (rice cake) is rolled out thin and a pink colored mochi is added to it so that you can see the pink through the white.

Inside of the pink mochi, some sweetened miso and a candied gobo (burdock root).

It is said that the 11th head of the Urasenke (Japanese tea ceremony school), Gengensai, created this sweet based on the "hishi-hanabira", a sweet that the Imperial court would eat during the New Year.

I purchased this one at Chikujian...delicious with some green tea.

  5. Wow, so many neat Japanese treats that I've never heard of before...thanks for enlightening me :)

PS...you must be the only person who saw my strawberry bread before I deleted it. My family said it was "OK" so I didn't think it was good enough for the blog hop. Then my knitting group said it was good...so you may see it again!

  13. Beautiful - I miss Japanese sweets and their beauty. Everything here is big and more rough, not too details (although there are good things about it too). Love delicate dessert.
