I had wanted to try falafel after seeing it on many blogs.
I got my chance at Mary's Mediterranean Kitchen. The falafel plate came with 5 falafel, some hummus, a salad and some flat bread...US$8.25 (tax included)
The falafel was quite dry and crumbly while the hummus was creamy.
But after eating 2 falafel with some hummus and flat bread, it felt as if I ate a whole bottle of salt!
My tongue was kinda out of whack at this point, but I think the only thing that wasn't salty was the flat bread and the salad. (I could be wrong)
I don't really like to waste food but threw out the remaining 3 falafel.
Dunno what I'd try if I go back, so if you know what is good there, please tell me.
Also had an an (sweet bean paste) doughnut from Watanabe Bakery (across the Food Court from Mary's).
This was WAY better than that malasada the other day...ahem.
Okay, now my posts from Hawaii are pau (pronounced "pow" means over/finished in Hawaiian) we can all go on a diet...

That's too bad about the falafel! Most falafel I've had is pretty bland, hence the need for the sauces and other toppings, haha.
ReplyDeletelol, I'll have to remember that K!

There's an instant-mix falafel that I buy on occasion when the mood strikes. Falafel shouldn't be salty, in fact it's supposed to be pretty bland like how K said. In Madrid there's a fastfood falafel chain called Maoz [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maoz_Vegetarian] which was my first experience with falafel. Love all the spicy sauces!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna look up a recipe and try making them, Rowena! And when I go back to Paris, I wanna try the falafel place everyone is talking about!

That is the same Maoz falafel chain that I went to in Madrid, but the other he mentions (L'As du Fallafel) I never heard of, and in a later post he doesn't even mention L'As, only Maoz. Maoz expanded to the states and from what I read, you add the toppings/sauces on by yourself at the salad bar. In Madrid (this was in 2007 I think), all condiments were behind a glass-fronted counter and you tell the guy what you want. So that settles it - you check out the Paris locale and I'll fly back to Madrid and we compare notes!
ReplyDeletedeal, Rowena :)
