I've told you how semai(narrow) our roads are.
Well, yesterday, as Satoshi and I were walking down our street, he got hit in the upper arm by the mirror of a passing van. The mirror's cover was broken slightly and luckily Satoshi was unharmed.
I think both the driver and Satoshi were mostly surprised.
The driver yelled at Satoshi and started to hold up traffic while doing so. Satoshi kept calm and asked if he wanted him to call the cops. The guy agreed and went to park his van (to get it off the road).
It was when we saw him turn into our lot that we realized he lives in our building...eep! (so much for knowing who our neighbors are)
Both were at fault, the driver for not slowing down or pulling over to one side, Satoshi for not paying attention.
The police came and while we filed a police report, the driver (who had calmed down a bit by then) kept making excuses why he couldn't stay around to help file the report.
Then the traffic investigation division came and the driver was getting kinda antsy at this point.
He had to bring the van back to the scene so that the investigators could check out the mirror and the van.
After all of that, the driver told the police that he didn't see a need to file a report.
The investigators however still took notes so that they could have something on file and then the top guy gave us all a lecture on how we all have to be more aware as pedestrians and drivers and sent us all on our way.
I'm just glad it wasn't any worse than it could've been and want to thank "whoever" was looking out for us.
"Thank you!"
Yikes, glad it all turned out okay!
ReplyDeleteThat's horrible! I hope Satoshi is okay. It is funny how in Japan (and other countries), the driver often has the right of way. Anyway, glad it wasn't worse. Take care!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I'm glad Satoshi is alright!!
ReplyDeleteOh man......I hope Satoshi doesn't have any residual damage. I'm glad it wasn't worse as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks LJ!
ReplyDeletePedestrians are supposed to have the right of way in Japan, Mariko :)
Thanks Kathy!
Take care everyone.

And here I thought Italy had the most skinniest of roads (to me anyway). Glad Satoshi wasn't seriously hurt, but how weird to find out that the driver was someone who lives in your building!
ReplyDeleteI swear we almost never see anyone, in the halls or stairwells, Rowena...
ReplyDeleteTake care.
Kat
