apple butter

It's Autumn, apples are in season.

So, naturally there are more apple products out there as well. The other day, my Twitter friend, H, sent me a care package! (Thank you!)

It was filled with all sorts of goodies and one that particularly stood out was this...apple butter.

Now, in the States, apple butter has no "butter" in it.

Sadly, I don't recall ever tasting apple butter in the States, though I had heard of it...

Well, in Japan, apple butter actually has butter in it! In fact it is made with sugar, apple, butter and a little salt.

We had this on some scones the other day for breakfast, the butter flavor isn't overpowering instead there is lots of apple flavor.

Thank you H!

  1. I tried apple butter in the states and didn't care for it (may as well eat applesauce), but I can imagine how much better this tastes with butter IN it.

Definitely apple season here and I so wanted to catch an event but apple region is so far away from us. My bro-in-law and his family used to go each year to the apple orchards after they've just been harvested because you can "take" whatever was left behind on the ground. I can only imagine how many "ugly" apples were left behind since on the pretty ones get taken.

  4. Hi, I've been stopping by your blog and thought I'd comment. It's always so nice to read about food in other places, and my dad's side of the family is from Japan so I get nostalgic :)

I think you should give American apple butter a chance! Good ones have a very deep flavor and color, a rich and smooth consistency, and is so delicious on good toasted bread! But this "apple butter" sounds good too. It reminds me, when I was living in Japan one summer with my cousin (who lives in Tokyo), I used to buy a black sesame butter which was sweet, and really good on toasted pan. I wish we had that here in New York.
