smoked salmon

Recently, I was searching for smoked salmon but the ones I found at the import grocers had fake sweeteners added...bah!

Luckily, when I went to the local supermarket there was smoked salmon made with sugar...

I figured out that when they brine the salmon before smoking is when they are using the sugar or sweeteners...

Wish Japan would pass some kind of law to label stuff when they use artificial sweeteners, would make life a little easier than trying to read the backs of all the label ingredients.

Who knows, I may convince myself to buy a stove-top smoker and smoke stuff on my own...

For now, I try to memorize the brands that I've found not to have these artificial sweeteners in them and try to only buy these products.

  2. Jalna, I think the US is pretty good about labeling foods when artificial sweeteners are added.

  3. I never understood why they use artificial sweeteners in savory things in Japan . It does not make them any lower in calories so why use them instead of sugar . It has always been my pet peeve with Japanese food manufactures . Have to read all the labels so carefully !
We have a smoker at home ( well it is one we have to use outdoors ) and my husband often smokes salmon in it ( he catches it too )he uses brown sugar and salt to brine it before smoking - it is so good !!

  4. I better start paying attention to the ingredient list when I buy smoked salmon -- it just never occurred to me that there might be artificial sweeteners.

  5. it is so weird Jo..even mentaiko I was going to buy had it on the label too...the label that always gets me is the one that uses sugar, artificial sweetener & mizuame...whenever I see this one I know it is to cut costs on how much sugar they are using...

dunno if the price of sugar has gone up where you are Rowena, but this is probably why lots of places here are adding it to stuff :(

    Take care you two.

  6. Interesting about labels Kat. I make my own smoked salmon and lox so I don't have to read those labels carefully.
