wbc & ginza

Were you watching the WBC (World Baseball Classic)?

This was probably the first time I watched ALL of Japan's games from beginning to end.

Wednesday was the championship game and it was a nail biter.

Satoshi was bummed he couldn't work from home.

In the end, Japan came out champs...what a krazy ride!

After the game, I went to run some errands in Ginza...

cool window in front of Wako
Some flowering momo (peach)?
and flowering camellia and sakura...
since I was nearby I picked up salads from Frijoles we’ve only tried their burritos so this was our first trying their salad...so good with their citrus lime dressing.

this was the Yahoo Japan screen, congratulating the Samurai Japan team... they are already on their way back to Japan today, too bad they aren't arriving at Haneda though, otherwise I would go check them out.

Congratulations Japan!

  1. the salad looks so ono! Yesterday, I gave into my craving for kalbi. $42 at Sorabol!!!! so with tax and tip, over $50.
Then today, I thought I should eat a salad because of that heavy lunch yesterday. Nope, I go to a korean takeout place in town and order full size spicy pork. and ate EVERYTHING!
Well, tomorrow I have my 2nd root canal appt so I guess I'm loading up since tomorrow I might not be able to eat :(. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

  4. I wasn't ranting as much on social media during this WBC run but I'm certain I watched more actual games than say, the last time Samurai Japan won it all. My home cable credentials granted me access to the Fox broadcasts and I used up a LOT of my allotted mobile wifi data at all hours watching games on the iPad: early afternoon in the office, Saturday mornings during breakfast, weekend evenings at the izakaya counter.

The early rounds in Taiwan and Tokyo were GREAT, especially the day games which turned out to be prime-time viewing for me. Also allowed me to get to know the names of Team Japan, and not just those at the superstar level (i.e. Murakami, Yoshida, Sasaki).

Sorry that Satoshi was stuck at work. I was streaming the game and by the time the 9th inning came, several of us in the office were following pitch by pitch. When Ohtani-vs-Trout began, everyone on our side was watching. What a moment! I never, EVER thought 2009 Japan vs Korea would/could be eclipsed but you can make an argument for the semi-final against Mexico. The USA final wasn't as crazy but was tense just for the few runs scored and the final moment that even has American baseball purists sold on the World Baseball Classic.

Keeping my eye on a commemorative Blu-Ray/UHD video release -- I'm gonna want it!

  5. Kirk it was delicious!

Jalna, all the stories of the the players made it more interesting to watch :)

Saburo, the only free stuff to see was the Japan games, all the other matches were "pay-per-view". The next one in 2026, is gonna be krazy!

    Take care everyone.

  6. WBC PPV?!! That SUCKS! Maybe I'm spoiled but man, as a general baseball fan it would *kill* me not to see some of those other games. Puerto Rico and the Dominicans have a rivalry, the Netherlands are good fun, and who knows about the likes of Italy in the future. Heck, I was watching Australia-Korea in the first round for the hell of it and that was fun too.

Leeched this program hosted by Nakai-kun which has a lotta highlights etc: https://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/nakai_news/backnumber/#/?pageType=article&number=1

  7. Saburo, they even had the guebos to announce "we are continuing coverage of the game" when it reached the estimated time limit on the television schedule...unlike regular NPB games where they shut off promptly at 21:00

    take care.
