Saturday, we checked out a place friend Greg enjoys in Hawaii, Gaku.

Their main shop is in Hawaii and they also have a shop in Tokyo.

It was about 30 minutes by train from where we live.

I ordered the 8 piece sushi…1650 yen (tax included)

They were delicious! super fresh

Loved the big mound of pickled ginger too

and what looked like uni (sea urchin) was actually their spicy ahi (tuna) (I think), yum!

I would have enjoyed the dashimaki egg more if it had been warmed up though

Satoshi had their sashimi set…1650 yen (tax included)

His set had 5 different fish, 2 or 3 slices of each, he said he enjoyed it (no photo)

His set came with a huge bowl of rice, pickles and miso soup.

Loved the cute dish the pickles were served on.

We can see why Greg loves this place.

We’ll be back whenever we are nearby

And then we decided to walk, and ended up walking all the way to Yukigayaotsuka.

Before jumping on the train we stopped at the non-manned pudding shop, Purinyasan.

This tiny shop sells all sorts of different custards (what the Japanese call purin)

Each one is 400 yen (tax included) and comes with its own "caramel" sauce

Satoshi chose coffee and cream cheese.  His came with a milky caramel sauce and blueberry sauce.

I chose the Okusawa Purin and Shuri no sato Purin which both came with a caramel sauce.

If you pay with cash, you need to have the exact change, which is why we bought 4.

They also take all sorts of QR code type of payments too.

These were delicious and I plan to return the bottles.

Japan is so trusting to have these types of honor box stores...

The weather was warm and great for walking (and eating).

  1. So, I just looked up the current exchange rate for 1650 yen....it's $11.34/US. Jesus, you can't even get two pieces nigiri for that here these days! Nice find!
