moroccan carrot salad

Well, we got a new computer which means that I can e-mail and post. But, when I tried to hook up our printer...sigh.

The printer we have doesn't work with Microsoft Vista....I called the printer maker and they said that I'll have to buy a new printer because the model that we have will only work with Microsoft XP...sigh.

Oh, and I also figured out that our new computer doesn't have a disk drive (we didn't really check when we bought it), which means we have to get an external disk drive, so that we can access stuff on floppies (you may be rolling your eyes, but we still use floppies). Anyway, I guess I didn't realize how much technology has upgraded in the past 7 years...sigh.

Wanted to show you this salad. It was the first thing I made when I came back last month.

It is supposed to be a warm salad, but I tried making it cold. It was good cold, really refreshing.

Adapted from "Body and Soul March 2008" : Serves 2
1 handful marcona almonds
salt
pepper
1 carrot
2 dried figs, cut into bite size pieces
1/2 dekopon (type of citrus), juiced
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/16 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon EVOO
couple sprigs of flat leaf parsley

Toast almonds for 10 minutes.
Grate carrot in food processor.
Whisk juice, spices and oil, then toss with carrots, figs.
Top with parsley and nuts.

NOTES: This recipe called for lemon juice, but since I didn't have any, I used the juice of half of a dekopon. It also called for pistachios and raisins, but since I didn't have any, I used almonds and figs.

I think I'll be making a lot of this in the coming months.

p.s. this is a dekopon, I've written about it before, here.

  1. Hey Kat! When I had to replace my computer I opted for one of the last remaining XP's out there for a variety of reasons. One the printer and I really didn't want to buy new software and hardware.

Hang in there hopefully everything works out. I just upgraded my mobile phone. Yeah! Talk about high tech...I got one of those PDA/Smartphones I have to read through the manual this time. I have no idea on how to do some of the functions. Oh well, have a great week, I'm slowly recuperating. Take care!

  2. You are so lucky, Laura, I guess I should have been more careful to check into everything before we bought the computer. Still, I really needed one!

    Take care.

  3. Hi kat,
After a week or two can you let me know how Vista is treating you? I know I have to make the change eventually, just want to know what I'll be in for. Thanks!!

  4. Hi Kat - Me too on XP. Reliable now, the Feds still use it, and I'm happy with it, knowing all about it. Won't switch until the Feds do.

Yah, you gotta get with the new storage stuff. Don't have a disk drive for my laptop. Have one for my desktop but don't use it anymore. The thing now are the USB flash drives. Amazing tiny things. I have a couple 4 GB ones that hold a LOT of stuff!

  5. Okay, I know about those thingys, Nate, but I still have to buy a USB external disk drive to get the stuff off my floppies and onto the flash drives :(

    Take care.

p.s. is it getting warmer where you are? we've had rain and wind...brrr.

  6. Thanks kat. Speaking of USB drives, when I was in the Kansai airport getting ready to come back home I saw these in an electronic store - sushi USB drives. I got a kick out of it. I only have the boring kind! :)

  7. I have way over a hundred or so full floppy disks at home sitting on my shelves at home, plus a couple dozen Zip drives (remember those from Iomega?), that I don't really remember what's on them and probably don't care anymore. I've been with PCs from the start (25 years plus) and there's so much information I've collected it's too much to handle. Just dealing with my current stuff keeps my attention! You probably will not believe that in college we used to write programs and have to punch the cards to feed to the computer. That was 38 years ago.

  8. Yikes! PC woes...my husband denounces Windows Vista, says it's full of "bugs", so I hope we won't need to purchase a new pc until a better Windows program comes out.

    The salad looks delish!

  9. I saw those in the electronics store, Lori and all the foreigners were crammed around them. :)

I took a programming class too, Nate, but in Intermediate. Though I don't remember too much about it. Just remember being able to make words you typed in scroll all across the screen.

Gosh, Rowena, I hope you don't have to buy a new PC anytime soon either. :)

    Take care everyone!

  10. Hi Kat,

I've been running Vista for > 1 yr now. Though it was troublesome at the start as we couldn't get the sharing on the network working but we soon got over it and I have to say I do love Vista. I guess I'm just a sucker for colors and pretty things :)

Not having a floppy drive must be a bit of an inconvenience since you still have loads of your data in them. I'm not sure what the prices of computer parts are in Osaka but if you don't mind shopping through ebay, I'm sure you'll be able to find a 2nd hand disk drive for cheap?
That's where we usually get our supply anyway. =)
