Not sure if the Japanese still call KFC, "Kentucky", but on a recent trip there, they had a new item called karauma. A slang term putting kara = karai (spicy) and uma = umai (tasty, delicious) together.
This chicken is fried crispy with ninniku (garlic), shoyu (soy sauce) and togarashi (chili pepper).
The meat is very tender and juicy and the spiciness kicks in after a few bites-- enough to make me cough, in a addicting kind of way.
I wish their meals came with the cole slaw instead of fries, it wouldn't be that much more healthy but oh well, it was still very delicious.
Yum--spicy friend chicken sounds really good. They never have the fun stuff here!
ReplyDeleteKat-I have a kind of dorky question to ask.
ReplyDeleteThere's this kikkoman commercial on TV which says, "umami means delicious." I thought umami was just one of the five basic tastes. So if uma=delicious, is it true that "umami" means delicious.
You may have to hop on a plane then, Deb :)
ReplyDeleteNo question is dorky, Genki, it has become part of the basic tastes, but means delicious, when I first heard "umami" on the Food Network, I realized the word had become a part of world food culture. Hope this helps.
Take care you two.
Kat
I loved their yuzu togarashi chicken but I don't think they have it anymore! About the coleslaw: I'm pretty sure I've asked them to switch it out for the fries and they've done it for me. Couldn't hurt to ask, I guess.
ReplyDeleteMcDonald's now has a spicy chicken sandwich that I really like, too! Mmmmm, togarashi rocks!
Thanks Abigail, I will try asking the next time I'm there. I loved their yuzu togarashi chicken also. I would actually love some of their mashed potatoes but they don't have it on the menu at all.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'll have to try that sandwich at Mickey D's...thanks for the heads up.
Take care.
Kat
Spicy garlic fried chicken...I bet that would do well here!

ReplyDeletewow that sounds spicy, Phoebe.

Spicy food is a winner! I wonder if the KFC's in Hawaii would consider this??? I sure hope so. :o)
ReplyDeleteOh man if this came to the U.S., I'd be at KFC for lunch right now!
ReplyDeleteHi Kat - Sure wish I had one of those KFCs in my neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteYou should try writing to them, Laura :)
ReplyDeleteIf you and Kirkk hop on a plane now, you'll be in time for lunch :)
Take care everyone.

Since arriving in Japan, I've dove into the Japanese cuisines full force. I've been so engulfed with the awesome sushi, yakitori, and soba, that I've been neglecting the American fast food joints here! I haven't tried the KFC in Japan, yet, but because of this post, I HAVE to go this weekend! I'm excited!
ReplyDeleteI hope you won't be disappointed Regina :)
ReplyDeleteTake care.
