what would you do?

What would you do if you had an apple that was kind of chalky tasting? Would you throw it out? Eat it as is?

We recently had an apple like that. I had cut it in half and had one of the halves with our breakfast. But because the apple was so chalky and not very sweet, I used the other half to make...apple pie.

With one puff pastry sheet, I used a cyclinder to cut out 4 circles, 2 were nice, the other 2 were made from the scraps, so they weren't too round.

I cut and heated the apple with some butter, sugar and cinnamon and cooked it down until it was almost like a jam.

After filling each circle, I baked it in a 200C (400F) oven for 20 minutes. You could hear it pooffing in the oven too, "poof" "poof"... the results were a delicious, flaky pie perfect for two afternoon teas and two snacks for Satoshi.

Gosh, it is the weekend already...hope yours is a good one!

  3. They look delish! Does Satoshi realize how lucky he is to be married to such a talented (and thrifty) cook?

    I'm afraid I would probably have thrown out that half-apple in my yard waste container. My kids would have given me a lecture on waste but neither of them would have touched that apple.

  9. Ever since we got the compost bin I've been like naaaaah...just chuck it out there with the rest of the rotting stuff. What use to be an effort to try and keep out kitchen scraps down has turned into not being able to produce enough. It takes a TON of stuff to make even a little bit of compost!

  13. Apples in puff pastry are the best. Great job in using it up in a fun and delicious way! I probably would have just spread almond butter all over it--I like your plan better!

  14. I don't remember having a chalky apple before. I probably would have thrown it out. But after reading this I'd definitely try out your recipe, it looks and sounds so good. I love apple pastries! :)

  16. The bin has small aereating (sp?) holes at the bottom for the worms to enter. I imagine it's like the Ritz Carlton or something compared to plain old wiggling through the dirt! :-DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
