In Japan, the word for dog is "inu" but often they are called "wan-ko-chan" (whahn-ko-chan) or "wan-chan", which I think may be the baby talk version...
Unlike the US dogs who say, "ruff ruff, bow wow or woof woof", dogs in Japan say "wan"..."wan wan".
By the way, cats are "neko" (neck-oh) but they are often called "nyan-ko chan" as "nya" or "nyan" is the sound they make..."nya nya".
Anyway, this is Hana-chan, a yorkshire terrier of an acquaintance. Her owner says that Hana-chan doesn't always like everyone. Guess she was okay with me as she couldn't keep still and wanted to be close by.
I've passed this house many times on my walks and the very first time I noticed this HUGE St. Bernard, I was bummed I didn't have my camera.
The owners have an old bench car seat in their living room and he hangs out there. They even leave their living room door wide open (so I could take a photo of him).
He makes the seat look pretty comfy, yeah??
What do dogs and cats say in your country?
p.s. we're in Kyoto today for my FIL's 3 year memorial service...
Hi!
ReplyDeleteIn Singapore, our baby talk version for cat is "meow meow" and dog "wuow wuow".. kinda like "wo wo" :)
Hope today goes well.
ReplyDeleteOur dog is named Hana too! (I got her while Mike was in Japan for work, so we decided she needed a Japanese name.) She didn't come with us for this trip though, so I can't wait to see her soon!
Interesting Moshi :)
ReplyDeleteYou must be excited to see her Linny :)
Take care you two.
Kat
What a cute photo of the St Bernard. Isn't it funny what "parents" will do for their dogs. Our dog's name is Tucker and his bark has changed now that he is almost 14 years old, it's more of a whooof, whooof! :D
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get more shots of their "clothing" Lyndsey...
ReplyDeleteTake care.

Hi Kat,
ReplyDeletecute pics.
I saw a cute dog while I was at a temple by Biwako Canal yesterday. To me it was doing a lot of yapping. 'Yap, yap, yap.' Poor thing didn't have any water but calmed down a bit when I spoke to it.
Hope you get to relax and see some cherry blossoms after the memorial service.
TK
Dogs in NZ that 'yap' are small dogs/ankle biters.
ReplyDeleteLarger dogs 'woof'.
I look forward to hear the other languages dogs (and cats) speak.
TK
I hope more people stop by and tell me about their dogs and cats in their country TK.
ReplyDeleteTake care.

In Mexico dogs normally say: "guau guau" and cats say "miau miau".
ReplyDeleteWe call dogs perros and cats gatos, but there are different versions of these, below a list of the cute names and normal/slang ones for central Mexico in the cities [it's different in other parts, indigenous people also have their own languages, like Nahuátl]:
Dog: perrito [cute], cachorrito [cute], canino, guaguaso, firulais.
Gato: gatito [cute], minino, felino, "bishibishi" [bee-shee bee-shee] is usually used to call them, and of course them being so smart, they underestand! Or maybe they just want food :].
so interesting Tig3rblanco!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this.
Take care.

Cute pictures! You have to love those faces. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove those pics of the terrier and big-o St. Bernard. :)
ReplyDeleteI got my cat in Japan but she ended up with a Cherokee name, "Usdi" - which means "baby". When she passed away we adopted two dogs, one of which we named Banzai! He's an awesome brindle coated snuggle-bear (lab and boxer mix).
Dogs say, "Arf arf", "woof", or "ar ar arwooo!" in our family.
Cats go, "meow" and "prrr-ow". :)
Indeed Debinhawaii :)
ReplyDeleteLove your pet's names Biologie :)
Take care you two.
