hawaii re-visits

Last year I wrote about having lunch with Nate at Lam's Garden.

Yesterday, we met up at Lam's Garden and he brought his cute grand-daughter along too.

We again ordered the minute chicken with cake noodle...so good. Cake noodle is something I don't see often in Japan, so good!

Stuffed bittermelon, Nate's favorite...these bittermelons were...bitter! but very tasty, though I think I like Nate's recipe for stuffed bittermelon better.

Ika (squid) with sin choi (pickled mustard cabbage). This was my first time trying this but I really liked it.

The squid was chewy and the sin choi had a sweet sour flavor, really tasty.

It was nice to catch-up with Nate and to meet his grand-daughter.

Thanks for lunch Nate!

  1. Stuffed bitter melons...Sounds good to me (something like stuffed peppers which I prepare). I have never eaten bitter melons. :(

  5. Was good seeing you again, really would like to have Satoshi there too to eat!

By the way we call the sin choi dish - Sin Choi Chow Yau Nyee. That's sin choi sit-fried with squid.

  10. I tried to take a closer look at the cake noodle dish...so cake noodle is like korean rice cakes? Tubular in shape, about 1.5 to 2 inches long? I've seen those, plus the dried oval-shaped ones (like a sort of rice pasta but thicker), and then I remember seeing a real cake/slab-type of rice where I guess you would slice pieces off for flat, short noodles. This is interesting.

  11. If I'm not mistaken Rowena, cake noodle are noodles that are deep fried then cut into squares...like frying an s&s saimin then cutting it into squares. They aren't like mochi (rice cake).

    Take care.
