ankintan

Lately the trend for Japanese travelling has been called "ankintan" (photo from 2024, Niigata)

"An" is the chinese character for "yasui" (cheap)

"kin" is the chinese character for "chikai" (nearby)

"tan" is the chinese character for "mijika" (short)

Choices for this Golden Week were Korea, Thailand and Vietnam

Others stayed in Japan and travelled to areas nearby to where they lived, maybe not needing to get on a train or in their car

Anyway with the exchange rate so bad for the Japanese these days, not many went abroad

The stories of how expensive things were for the ones that went abroad was quite alarming

Hopefully the yen will balance out so more Japanese can travel abroad soon.

  1. ugh...terrible to hear about the exchange rate! I lit up when I read Vietnam - maybe one day...

  2. Many friends returning from their Japan trips tell of empty planes and having one or more seats to themselves. Even when we came back in February we each had a whole row to ourselves!
We wondered why the airline moved my friend to the row behind when we were booked on the same row. Then, we noticed there weren't that many people in the waiting area and sure enough, many rows were completely empty. Good for us, but yet, sad.

  3. hope you can visit Vietnam soon, Rowena!

V, people were packing rice, ramen in their bags, so they didn't have to buy it in Hawaii...

    Take care you two.

    Take care.
