I want to share with you two more strawberries that we've tried.The other week, I walked past a yaoya (vegetable/fruit stand) in our shopping arcade and couldn't pass these up.
The sign said "asa-tori" which means "picked this morning". A container of this for 400 yen (about US$4).
I'm not sure of the variety but they were fresh, local and sweet.
I also wanted to show you Saga Honoka, from Saga prefecture in Kyushu. These berries are quite large and sweet. Their mascot, or "image character" as the Japanese like to call them, is Licca-chan, who is (in my opinion) the Japanese Barbie.

That first photo of the strawberries looks really yummy..... I can almost smell them.
ReplyDeleteYum! We still have a few months to go here before we can get local strawberries...but I am loving champagne mangoes lately! (Not local but oh, so delicious.)
ReplyDeleteMotH is allergic to strawberries, so when I buy, I end up freezing half the crate. I suppose I could buy less, but when you see that whole flat of beautiful, red, ripe strawberries....so hard to resist. So far the only fruits I've been eating alot are clementine and kiwi. Beef up the immune system.

"Asa-tori" - I just love the Japanese language. Some of the words are so descriptive and not quite the same in translation.

are strawberries supposed to be sweet? how sweet actually? those we bought (locally grown I think) here in Malaysia were all sour. very very sour so now we never buy them. the only sweet ones were the canned strawberries for me to use in baking and such (which of course along with the heavily sugared syrup).

ReplyDeleteThe perfectly ripened ones are really sweet Elcynthia, almost like eating sugar. I've never heard of canned strawberries, sorry to hear your experiences in Malayasia were so bad!

Those strawberries look absolutely delicious Kat! I'm quite jealous. We don't get a lot of nice fresh fruit here in Barbados, most of our stuff is imported so they look and taste awful by the time we buy them =( As a result, I don't eat much fruit even though I love them so much =(

You know, when I read "asa tori", I thought morning bird, no that can't be right. lol. Anyway, those strawberries look really good. I hope you enjoyed them. (^o^)
