ritter sport

Found this Ritter Sport at Jupiter, an import market in Kyoto recently...milk chocolate, hazelnuts & nougat cream.

Delicious, lots of hazelnuts.

While I really enjoy dark chocolate, sometimes you just need something sweet.

Apparently this just came out for Winter and is only on their German site.

covering a favorite

The other day, I covered some of my favorite nougat with some leftover melted chocolate....delicious.

odds & ends

I tried the fried gobo recipe again. This time, I whittled my own. The gobo comes out really crispy, like potato chips. Also, when you add it to the sauce, let the sauce kind of evaporate and really caramelize on the gobo, this adds to the flavor.

With the leftover gomoku mame, I added it to our morning omlette. After you put your scrambled egg into the pan, add the beans without any of the sauce. And cook the eggs to your liking.

I recently bought this nougat, made in Belgium by Vital. It has almonds and hazelnuts. It was a bit harder than the one I like from South Africa, but still worth it.

Another chagashi (sweet for tea), this one is made by Owariya. We had some soba wafers before. This one is called soba mochi, the outside is made from buckwheat flour.

This wagashi (Japanese confection) is made by Mamemasa and is called Tsukishiro. Sweet bean paste is flattened to a circle then dipped in a light sugary coating.

Hope you have a great weekend!

torrone

I think I told you that I like nougat. So, when I ran into this box made by Luigi D'Amico at the gourmet supermarket, I had to get it. I couldn't read the label, it was in Italian, but could pick out the words for nougat, chocolate and what I thought said nuts. So, I knew the combination had to be a winner.

And I was right. A thick chocolate nougat filled with whole hazelnuts! Rich enough to make you think you are eating fudge, but chewier. A thin wafer on the side so that you can grab it without getting your fingers messy. Soft enough but not sticky as to stick to your teeth.

If it weren't so expensive, I think I'd buy all the other flavors they had.

south africa

The thing I love about Japan is all the imports that you can find...for example, recently I've been seeing food items from South Africa. Like this grapefruit. It was huge! I squeezed the whole thing for juice the other morning, but only came out with half a cup. It was tart but not squinch up your face tart.

And then there was this nougat made by Walters. The market I found this at had a mac nut version, a cranberry almond version and this one with just almonds. I loved it. It was soft, but not so sticky that it stuck to your teeth.

And there was this cool edible wafer-like paper that give you someplace to hold while eating it and also helped you to get it out of the wrapper.

Though everything isn't local, it still is a nice way to taste different parts of the world.
