lunch

It has been almost a month since my "almost everyday" lunch pick up bakery went out of business. I've been buying bento(boxed food) for lunch.

There was the chicken soboro bento--399 yen (about US$3.99). Chicken soboro means ground chicken. The ground chicken is seasoned with shoyu (soy sauce), mirin (sweet rice wine) and sugar.

Haigamai bento--399 yen (about US $3.99). Haigamai as I understand is the brown rice with the germ taken off. I think this is the step before it turns to white rice. There was also nishime, a piece of fried chicken & konnyaku with aburage.

Omurice (omlette rice)--398 yen (about US$3.98)--the inside of this omlette has ketchup seasoned rice and bits of chicken. There was way too much ketchup around the omurice.

Chili dog--sorry forgot how much it cost. I liked this one because the bread was crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside and the chili was spicy.

Sometimes when I have rice sitting in the rice warmer, I buy some okazu (side dishes). This day, I bought some togan ebi ankake (wintermelon with shrimp and thick sauce), yakinasu no pirikara ohitashi (chilled grilled spicy eggplant), su-buta (sweet sour pork) and some yakisoba (fried noodles)--293 yen (US$2.93).

Yakisoba (fried noodles)--180 yen (about US$1.80), I prefer my yakisoba a bit crispy, with thin noodles, this version was dry and the noodles were fat.

What do you usually eat for lunch?

I love hearing about people's lunches! ^_^ $3.99/day is a pretty good deal for an everyday lunch meal...I've been eating out at different restaurants for lunch in the past few weeks, but keep on telling myself I must start to bring lunch from home - will save so much money (not to mention calories, hehehe)...sadly enough, such things for me are easier said than done! ;)

those bentos look good!

for my lunch it's usually left-overs or frozen food. :( although I do like hot pockets.

Hi Kat - Wow $3.99! That is a very nice price for lunch. I can't even get lunch for under $7 in our cafeteria.

On work days I either skip lunch or eat leftovers from home. :(

On the weekends I wake up late so my lunch is actually a very late breakfast. Something like Portuguese sausage eggs and rice, loco moco, fried rice, etc. :)

I love hearing about your lunches (and dinners and desserts) too, Kathy :)

ooh, hot pockets, haven't had that in a couple of years, Genkitummy.

Thanks Paz!

I was quite surprised at how cheap some of these bentos are too, Kirkk. Your lunches look pretty awesome too :)

I think if I skipped a meal, I would fall over, Lori :) I like your lunches on the weekend.

Would you like that with or without a lot of ketchup, Dhanggit? I like hamburger steak too :)

Take care everyone, it was nice to hear what you all eat for lunch!

I missed all the bentos that I ate in Japan.

now back home, I made my own bentos ( mostly from dinners leftovers) or stir-fry a simple veg dish and eat with rice.

I'm not always good at having lunch because I tend to snack throughout the day. Sometimes it'll be gelato or some cookies. Other times it'll be leftovers from last night's dinner. How I'd love to have places like those in Japan! It would be bento every single day.

mmm your bentos sound very healthy and delicious, Peony :)

I'd like gelato for lunch, Rowena :)

Take care you two.

I wish I could have these delicious-looking bentos every day but I'm afraid my lunches are usually limited to leftovers and/or quick items I pick up while running errands. Today I didn't have time for lunch until late afternoon but enjoyed some delicious leftover penne pasta with olive oil, basil, lots of garlic, grape tomatoes and roasted zucchini.

If I'm out and about, sometimes I'll pick up one of the Costco hot dogs (Sinai kosher all-beef, one of my favorites) with sauerkraut or stop into one of the many Vietnamese eateries around me and get a banh mi sandwich.

Other days, sadly, it's canned soup or a frozen burrito. I do try to stock up on the healthier versions of these foods, though.

Kat, I love all your photos! The only complaint I have is that they make my stomach growl. :-)

Your lunch sounds really good, Jenster :) We should trade sometime.

Take care.
