kugahara

Untitled A couple of stations from where we live is Kugahara.

Like most of the stations in this area, they have their own shopping arcade.

I had bookmarked Hutte, which apparently means "hut" in German.

This tiny bakery is filled with all sorts of hard type breads.

I bought some breads for us to try.

The hamburger was homemade, and went nicely with their bun.

The chocolate cranberry and walnut stick was filled to the gills with chocolate!

Satoshi enjoyed his mentaiko baguette...baguette that is slathered with butter and topped with mayonnaise and mentaiko (spicy pollack roe).

The scone was also filled with lots of chocolate and chunks of walnuts.

Untitled And then I stumbled upon Mon Reve, a french bakery.

Chorizo tarte was like a spicy pizza and the meat pie was flaky and filled with lots of cheese and seasoned ground beef.

Untitled Yamamoto is a tiny meat shop in between of these two bakeries.

The kushikatsu (fried things on a stick) was delicious.

Sweet onions and pork fried perfectly.

I'll be back to these shops and look forward to finding more places to try.

Nitpicking as always, I can't help but mention that the correct word for "hut" in German would be "Hütte". I even heard that Japanese sometimes use the German Umlaut (äöü) in store names because they think it looks cute (in in German of course it is more than that- they change the pronunciation quite considerably). But probably in many store names they rather omit these "strange" signs to avoid confusion and the like... anyway- mouthwatering post! Thank you so much for your frequent posts!

Greetings from Düsseldorf (yey, again the "ü"),

Mmm, bread. I'm normally a crusty, crunchy bread person, but the chorizo tarte is something I would inhale! Right now, I am bummed because St. Germain in Hawaii will be closing all their bakeries. No more ogura (red bean & whipped cream filled) cake, no more guava cake, no more ham rolls by August. It's not that there aren't other Japanese style bakeries in Hawaii; it's just that St. Germain has things only they make that have a certain taste I love. I think KuluKulu really took away a lot of their business, sadly. Do you remember St. Germain fondly, Kat?
