hirumeshiya

Up the street from Umeyashiki, is Oomorimachi.

We walked the shopping arcade and picked up lunch from Hirumeshiya, a spice curry shop.

Satoshi chose the lamb curry and veggie keema...1100 yen (tax included).

He said his curry was super spicy.

I tried the nori chicken curry...1100 yen (tax included).

When we first moved to Tokyo, we visited the Oomori Nori Museum , where for 300 years, nori farming used to be a booming business in Tokyo Bay until 1962.

The chicken curry is cooked with nori which gives it a black tinge to it.

To serve, they also included some pieces of nori.

The nori accented the curry and I enjoyed this.

There are other items on their menu that we want to try, so we'll be back whenever we are in the area.

bento original

Up the street from Bakurry, is Bento Original...a teeny shop selling bento.

The woman running the shop was a little gruff .
I tried the nori bento (small)...380 yen (tax included).

There was teriyaki beef, kinpira, sausage & tamagoyaki (rolled omelette)...two layers of nori and rice.

A bit on the salty side, but cannot go wrong with the amount of food for the price.

Satoshi went with the kinpira bento...400 yen (tax included).

Rice on the bottom, kinpira and teriyaki beef on top.

He said his food was also salty, but also a bargain for the amount of food.

We will be back to try other items on the menu when we are in the area.

bakurry

I stumbled upon Bakurry when I was looking for Sakaeya Bakery.

The place wasn't open that time, but was when we passed by this past Saturday, so we stopped to pick up some items to try.

When we left the store there was a small line, so we figured it must be good...

Curry pan filled with curry and mashed potato.

I love mashed potatoes but don't see them too often, so I  had to try

The curry has just the right amount of spicy for me, I also liked the crunchy outside.
Satoshi got the curry pan with soft boiled egg.
How do they keep the egg from setting? it was still oozy even after toasting.
We also tried their egg tarts.

I would've liked this better if the crust were more flaky and not chewy.

I was leery with their heat up instructions...it says wet the curry pan...toast until crispy.

Um, I've heard of "misting" bread before toasting but not totally soaking it like the picture shows.

And how long should we toast it until it gets crispy?!

We ended up not "wetting" or "misting" the curry pan and only toasted it for about 5 minutes.

Now I understand why I should have “misted” it, since they keep their curry pan in the refrigerated showcase only wrapped in an eat and go paper , “misting” would have “freshened” it up when I toasted it...

Next time we want to try their custard pudding, so we will be back!

As for their name, Bakurry...it is part "bake" and "curry"...put together it sounds like "bakery".

takeuchi bakery

We checked out a new (to us) bakery, Takeuchi Bakery in the Umeyashiki area which is about a 30 minute walk from where we live.

Online it says that they have been in business for over 50 years.

Satoshi tried their bacon, egg burger...he said this was worth the 240 yen (tax included).

He also tried their veggie "dog"...fresh veggies put into a hot dog bun.

I tried their croq-spa...croquette & spaghetti noodles in a hot dog bun.

carby delicious!

We also shared this beni-imo anpan...anpan filled to the gills with purple sweet potato.

We'll be back!

this and that

How are you doing? We are hanging in there.

We picked up some wagashi (Japanese sweets) for Children's Day (what was called "Boys Day"  when I was growing up)

I think Kanto (East Japan)  wagashi often has miso an (miso flavored filling) in their sweets as I've seen other items with the miso flavored fillings...

The kashiwa mochi that we tried from Okuniya had miso flavored bean paste in it...more savory than sweet.

We also tried their mikan daifuku...the mikan (tangerine) that they used was kinda sour though...meh!

Love this arare snack...it is sweet and salty.
We went back to Sakaeya Bakery...this time around we tried their katsu pan...super thin piece of pork that is fried...I guess it is similar to schnitzel.

I loved how crispy it was.

We also tried their mini an doughnuts...tiny orbs filled with sweet bean paste that are fried and covered in sugar.

So good with coffee.

This month in front of the senior day care...origami irises.
I was surprised to see so many different foreign languages on this construction sign but it makes sense since there are many foreigners working at these construction sites these days.

On the last day of Golden Week, we had a pupu party.

We picked up various stuff at the market, ran back before the rain and had a leisurely lunch.

Have "finally" taught someone to use their ear pods...now I don't have to listen to him "blasting" his podcasts...a good thing about his using the ear pods, he cannot hear when I take photos of him...ha!

Rainy season has started in Okinawa...it is only a matter of time before Honshu starts.

Our state of emergency will be extended until the end of May and I think the wedding we were supposed to attend at the end of the month might be postponed (again!).

There are so many hiccups with the vaccinations that it is getting kind of ridiculous.

We found a few more places to explore nearby, so we hope to get out to see them on the next sunny day.

Have a safe weekend.

seminole

Seminole is a type of citrus that I came upon.

The outer flesh is quite thick making it hard to peel.

Online it suggests you cut it into wedges...they call this the "smile cut".

I like the naming for this type of cut.

We need more smiles these days.

I'm glad we tried this, it was juicy and very sweet.
