fish sauce

Yesterday, I made Grilled Thai Beef Salad for dinner.

I had to marinate the meat ahead of time and had to open a new bottle of fish sauce...

When I opened the cap, I was puzzled because I've never seen anything like this...

I tried to slip a butter knife in between the crevices to pry it open...nope.

Frustrated...I got a pushpin and "stabbed" the nub several times, creating a "shower head" then shaking out the amount of sauce I needed...

Afterwards, I looked online and I apparently was not the first to encounter this problem (whew!).

In the end, everyone suggested snipping the "nub" off.

I'll do that the next time I need to use some fish sauce...

Love the internet!

Have a nice weekend.

What a mysterious cap. Was it a Japanese product or a foreign product? It's funny when you encounter puzzling, seemingly complicated things in foreign counties only to find out there is a well-estabished simple way of handling said mystery. Like old fashioned Japanese Ramune bottles with the marble inside! Another amazing dish from Le Kat Bistro. Looks so refreshing and healthy and substantial at once!

Most of not all fish sauces from Thailand have tips like that. They're super secure so you don't have to worry as much about leakage. Very important with stinky fish sauce!!

I like your shower-head idea.

LOL, We had issues with the new upside down (squeeze) ketchup, mayo, and mustard bottles. "Everyone" would aim it supposedly down at the sandwich, but would either get splashed because of the amount of "squeeze" you put on the bottle or miss their sandwich! It took practice, but apparently I didn't have enough practice because today I squirted some ketchup on the side of my plate at breakfast. :)

Fish sauce I get in Canada has a cap like that too . The first time I got it I was really puzzled too , in the end I cut the " nub " off with a knife . Not the safest thing to do , but scissors were not able to get it off ... Next time I will try the " shower head " idea !
I have to try that salad - it looks great !!

no Anon, it was a foreign cap, I'm too spoiled with the Japanese ones :)

Makes sense Rona!

lol Mich :)

if you do "shower" style Jo, just be prepared to get sauce all over the place when you shake it out...

now I know, Rowena!

will definitely do that Kirk!

Take care everyone.
