shogayu + winner

First off, I want to thank all of you that entered my giveaway, the lucky winner picked by the random number generator was Lynne! Please email me your snail mail address at kat (dot)nsatoshi (at) gmail (dot) com, so I can send out your box of "stuff".

Now, onto my post...depending on where you are in the world, you may have the need to warm up.

In Japan, there are packages of instant shogayu, but there is a pretty easy way to do it yourself.

First of all, what is shogayu? Literally it is ginger hot water. The packaged instant version has kudzu (arrowroot) in it to make it thick, and sugar but if you don't have kudzu you can make it with just 3 ingredients: water, ginger & your favorite sweetner.

I grated a nub of ginger using a fourth for a different recipe and the rest for the shogayu. (If you want it more "gingery", then grate more.)

In a pot, I put 3 cups of water and the grated ginger. When the water came to a boil, I stirred in a bit of honey. (You could make this really sweet or not, it is up to you.)

After the honey melts, strain the mixture into a cup (unless you want to drink the grated ginger). Drinking this mixture should definitely warm you up, naturally.

Stay warm everyone!

p.s. I think this drink would also be quite nice chilled too, but I'll try that in a couple of months.

p.p.s. the winner of this giveaway no longer has a public blog

I am definitely going to try that.....perhaps this weekend!
It's cold here, -12 this morning when I left for work (with a windchill of -30), so ginger hot water sounds GREAT!

My wife and In-Laws still subscribe to Hot-Cold eating...so ginger is really supposed to help since it is "Yang".

Yum, sounds like ginger tea...just add a little lemon. It would be good right now, with our storm and the cold front coming through.

What a lovely surprise to win the prize! I will email you my snail mail information! Thank you so much. I truly find your blog a gift each time I read it because I learn something new. I am with most of the others with today's post. I was sitting here thinking as I was reading now that would be a great cup of tea with the cold weather....brrr! Thank you again!

Hey Kat! I had lemon and green tea today. Just to let you know, that although honey is healthy, its properties change when you use a metal spoon to scoop it out, and hot water to dissolve it. Whenever I drink honey, I go for a plastic spoon and room temperature water to drink; especially for manuka honey for it has healing properties.

Hi Kat and Satoshi
I went to Sushi bar located in new shopping centre recently opened in my home city. The bar is called Yo Sushi and it seems like more trendy English style than authentic Japanese. The dishes come on a conveyabelt I'm sure you know already. I had prawn nigiri, Salmon Dragon roll and some sort rice dish with chicken and vegetables. What is unusual the rice is sweet than savoury but still nice. Don't see as classed as Japanese Restaurant and more expensive than buying a sushi box from the supermarket.
There coughs and colds circulating around, I have recovered from nasty cold. Heard ginger and hot coke work well for a cough and dark chocolate.

Oof--great timing on this post. It's freezing here (I just looked at my window in the living room and there is about an inch of ice on the INSIDE of it! Yikes!) I'm going to make some right now :D

most sushi places season their rice with vinegar and sugar, Chimerastone, so some may be sweeter than others...hot coke? as in coca-cola?

whoa, snow inside your window that is amazing, tofugirl! stay warm!

Take care you two.
