ramen-ya

Got a chance to catch-up with my friend, Debi. She works full-time, so to meet up with her, we had to schedule and re-schedule.

Lunch was at Kua A'ina at Ward. I tried their Grilled eggplant & pepper sandwich. It was huge!

My only peeve with the sandwich is that they should peel the skins off the peppers and eggplants (too tough to eat!)

It had been 2 years since we had seen each other and it was a nice catch-up with Debi! (Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule!)

For dinner, Wen and I went to try out the newly opened Ramen-Ya.

(Previously, we had tried to check them out, but gave up because it was REALLY busy.)

I tried the chicken katsu ramen...nice tender chicken katsu. I thought the broth was a little too rich, probably because of the katsu in there...$7.50

The portions are kind of on the larger size too.

Wen liked her gyoza ramen. It looked like the same tonkotsu broth. She gave me a gyoza to try and there was lots of garlic in there....$6.50

I'm not a ramen connoisseur, but I think their broth was tonkotsu, which is made from the pork and pork fat, which overall seemed a bit rich to me, as I normally would order shoyu based ramen. Also, eating ramen in 80-something degree weather is not really something I would normally do, but the cool tradewinds as we stepped out of the restaurant made it all good.

For me, their ramen was good, but I would go back to try other things like their fried rice or curry.

Good morning Kat.

Sounds like you have had a great 'vacation' or should I say 'time' in Hawaii as you seem to have been living there rather than just relaxing.

Anyway, I totally agree with you re: the ramen in summer thing.

It's interesting to hear about the pepper and eggplant skins being tough. I've been having these 2 things a lot here recently skins and all-bbq-style with a yuzu miso paste I picked up in Tokyo-and they've been good. Just goes to show not all things are the same in the vege department-but you knew that already:)

More yummy food. I have not been to Kua A'ina in ages--I got mad at them when they were always out of avocados. ;-)

I would be mad too if they were always out of avocados Debinhawaii ;)

Oooh...gyoza ramen. It's been getting cooler here (18°C in the morning), so this would definitely hit the spot for me.

Yum, another lovely food stop in Hawaii that I'll definitely have to try. So nice you've been able to find some great ones during this trip!

The ramen looks delicious- although I agree, tonkotsu broth is usually too much for me as well.

hope you get some noodles Rowena :), looks like Japan will take some time to get to 18C...today it was something like 34C, eep!

I hope you like this one Jude :)

Yeah K, I usually like shoyu ramen :)

Take care everyone!
