yokohama

Went to Yokohama to see the roses on Thursday, because the rest of the week was supposed to rain...

I stopped in at Bluff Bakery because I love their carrot cake & currypan....
Luckily I went to Yamashita Park early, there weren't too many people out and about yet
it was also kinda blazing

It's Mother's Day here, my mom used to love roses, I think she would've enjoyed this park.

Wishing all the moms out there a Happy Mother's Day.

(white flowers for moms no longer with us…peonies bought at flower shop near JR Ishikawacho station...hoping the slightly pink one blooms)

Friday, went to Yokohama to check out the roses at Yamashita Park.

It was kinda blazing
Yokohama People: the guy taking care of the roses
there was a slight rose fragrance in the air

Yokohama People (and furry ones): huge poodles!

Stopped in at Bluff Bakery to get a curry pan for lunch
And their carrot cake (shared with Satoshi)
Before going home, I stopped into Union Supermarket

They had some arare made in Yokohama, this one is made by Kominato Minoya in business since 1929!

These tiny arare look like peanuts, there are actual peanut pieces also in the package but the majority are the tiny arare, would get this one again.

And beer made in Yokohama,  Black IPA for me and Lager for Satoshi

The past week was quite rainy and it got really cold too (12C (53F)), so Friday's sun was really welcomed (even if it was kinda blazing)

Yokohama People: glad these furry ones did not bark at me...

out to smell the roses

After lunch yesterday, I went to Yamashita Park because I saw something on social media that the roses were blooming.

From where we live it is about 30 minutes by train.

There were tons of people, but also tons of flowers.

So pretty and definitely more flowers than the Harbor View Park which we visited last year.
I also picked up some carrot cake and a slice of banana bread from Bluff Bakery before coming home.

A little more photos and a short video here

Satoshi wanted to check out Yokohama, so I showed him where the Harbor View Park was.

There weren't many flowers in bloom.

Lunch was in Chinatown at Hoshou.

Their beef belly curry was featured on a television program, but it was kind of disappointing, the meat wasn't tender and Satoshi felt the rice was on the hard side..990 yen (tax included)

We also tried their seafood takoyaki...1600 yen (tax included) for two

Kind of like fried kamaboko...at least there was a scallop in each piece...not worth the price though

Red brick warehouses...bummer this was under renovation, so no exploring inside.

So many people with their furry kids out and about.

Yamashita Park...HUGE rose garden better than Harbor View Park (and no need climb up the steep hill!)
Vanilla Beans The Roastery inside Yokohama Hammerhead, shopping/food area which is (I think) part of the ferry terminal

Satoshi had their Minato Mirai doughnut which was actually a doughnut shaped ganache covered with hard shell like chocolate...so ono! 880 yen (tax included)

I chose their Fondant chocolat...1210 yen (tax included)

Frozen raspberry & pistachio bits and warm, oozy chocolate in the center topped with vanilla ice cream...so rich and ono!

Both items came with choice of drink, we both had hot coffee.

The skies were kind of overcast all.day.

So the views from the cafe as well as the parks weren’t too impressive.

Even if everyone was out and about, it was nice to be out of the house and away from the reno noise (they work on Saturdays!)

I have more photos to share here if you are interested.

Went to Yokohama today.

I got out early to beat the crowds.

Walking in Motomachi there were benches to sit on and a lot of rose arches.

Saw this huge hot dog...
thought this barber shop was cute
major stairs and hills in this area
bicycle riders zooming down the hills, kinda scary!
pretty stained glass canopy
these were just some of the cats I saw
steep hills
and stairs
Iwasaki Museum

Bluff Bakery's carrot cake, so moist and delicious!

Kikuya which has been in business since 1924.

I purchased their rum balls, I think this is their popular item.

We'll have this tomorrow night with pupus.
Uchiki Bakery has been in business since 1888.

We're going to try their bread for breakfast tomorrow.
I wanted to check out the English Rose Garden.

There were tons of people with their dogs taking photos of them with the roses.

And cos players (people who dress up as characters from anime, films, books, video games) taking photos with the roses.
This dog was huge! at least 2 feet tall.
Former British Consulate.
Rotary for the former British Consulate
Garden Bear
Lovely rose fragrance with the slight breeze
Harbor View Park.

Apparently this area was the model for the Ghibli anime, "From up on Poppy Hill"..gonna have to re-watch this since I don't remember what the story was about.

Glad I got out early, it was blazing and there were tons of people out and about (even if my photos don't seem like there were).

I'll be back to the foodie places I checked out today too.
