diego's

For some reason I was craving nachos, probably because I'm going back to Japan in less than a week and know that I can't get good Mexican food....and I didn't want to get them from any "chain", so I went to Diego's.

They make everything fresh.

Their version of nachos is called "carne asada chips"...US$6 + tax.

If I am not mistaken they make their own chips too, they are super crunchy and stayed pretty crisp even after the 10 minute drive home.

Flavorful, marinated steak (had a little gristle), tomatoes, onion, sour cream, cheese, cilantro and salsa verde.

I loved this! The amount of these carne asada probably could have been shared, but I didn't :P

The flavors kinda reminded me of the greek nachos I made awhile back.

It's Halloween in the Islands, hope you have a safe one!

UPDATE: as of 3/2012, this place has closed

Have you ever tried Ola Tacos in Shinsaibashi? It's really a bar, so they only open in the evenings (at 7, I think), but they have pretty good Mexican food. It's more like Mexican than Tex-Mex, and they make their own corn tortillas.

Hope you have a safe trip back to Japan (it's still warm here!), and I hope your grandmother has fully recovered!

Kat- That nachos looks good.... Hopefully one of these days I can try it. I just picked up a "chain" nachos supreme for Kelli's dinner couple nights ago.

Wow! That looks so yummy! I wouldn't have shared either.

I've only been to La Bamba in Dotombori, Rona, when I get back, I'll look this place up :) Thanks for the heads up!

Ooh, Diego's also had Carne Asada Fries, Dennis, will have to try this the next time :)

You are so good to Kelli, Rick, I hope you can have these "nachos" one day soon :)

Thanks Pocky, glad you are on my side :)

Take care everyone!

You're right about the disappointing Mexican food in Japan... nachos here in Okinawa have about 8 chips on a plate with a slice of cheese on each... seriously! Usually, I just make them at home!

Mmm...now I am craving nachos. Thanks a lot! ;-)

I went to Diego's once and was disappointed. I don't even remember why. Your nachos look great. Looks like I'm gonna have to give them another chance.

Hehe...I know that I wouldn't share either. Did you pass out candy to the kids?

K and S said...

he he, "you are welcome" Debinhawaii ;)

definitely give them another go, Jalna, I hope this time they won't disappoint!

nope Rowena, in fact, we couldn't hear anyone walking around outside. It seems most parents take their kids to the mall to trick-or-treat this days!

Take care everyone!

this is a great treat, especially with some really hot salsa!Oh, and fresh warm chips!

Mary, 8 chips is a rip-off. Whenever I visit Okinawa, I get my "taco" fix by eating taco rice :)

I was a wimp and got mild salsa Jann, but I bet hot would have been just as tasty :)

Take care you two.

Sounds like you've had a nice time in Hawaii Kat. It's always good to catch up with family and old friends.I love Mexican but we don't have any great Mexican restaurants in our area.

Hi Kat - I'm glad you got your fix..... I'm wondering, would I miss Mexican food if I moved away from San Diego? Hmm.....

K and S said...

Thanks Barbara, I think the farther you are away from the origins, the more challenging it is to make it authentic :)

Hmm I have a feeling you may miss Mexican Kirk, but may miss your SE Asian foods more :)

Take care you two.

Just a warning--Ola Tacos is good (flavour-wise), but the servings are kind of small, too! But I think the tacos are about the same size as at (real) Mexican restaurants in the US, too. The tortillas are maybe 4" in circumference. I think you get more than 8 tortilla chips with the nachos, but I don't think it's much more!

Thanks for the heads-up Rona, I know most "mexican" are expensive in Japan. Will definitely take Satoshi to try this :)

Take care.

p.s. were you able to get Meyer lemons?

Rona Y said...

No meyer lemons, yet, but thanks for asking! I keep looking around my area, but haven't found any. I was in the Ishibashi area this past weekend, but by then I had forgotten to look for them! Gurunavi doesn't have any, yet, and I found some on Rakuten, but they were more than Y300 each! I bit expensive for my pocketbook. Hopefully the guy I tried to order from last year will have them soon.

BTW, I tried that pizza place in Ikeda that I mentioned once before (Pizzeria Pancia Piena). It was actually quite good, and is probably my second favourite Neapolitan-style pizza place in the Kansai area. I'd probably go back regularly if it weren't in such an inconvenient (for me) area. Then again, it's close to Gokoku, so I could have my pizza and eat my cake, too! (I tried Gokoku's Kokuto Roll cake--omg it was sooooo good!)

I have yet to try both places Rona, the last time we tried to get into the pizza place they were packed! Hope you can find some reasonably priced Meyers :)

Take care.

Rakuten has New Zealand meyer lemons today! I think they've had them on-and-off for a while, but the last few times I checked, nothing came up. It works out to about Y100 each, but shipping is quite high, so it's really about Y200 each unless you buy a box of 50! I was hoping for domestic meyer lemons, but the guy I tried to buy from last year still hasn't e-mailed me back, so I just may spring for the 50 to make sure I get some. They can be frozen, anyway!

About the pizza place--I think you really need to make reservations. I arrived at 5:30 only to discover they'd changed their opening time to 6:00. Went back at 6:05-ish, and three or four tables were already occupied, and they wouldn't seat me because all the other tables were reserved for 6:30! I got take out and ate half of it while sitting on a nearby bench. Not the best dining experience, for sure, but it was still good pizza!
