49 day service

Friday, we went to Kyoto...we were lucky to get to see Mount Fuji for most of our flight.

Saturday, the 49 day service for MIL went relatively smoothly and we all had lunch together at Touzan which is located in the Hyatt Regency Kyoto.

We've had meals here in the past especially after memorial services for FIL.

This time was pandemic style...temperature check and hand sanitizer when you enter the hotel then temperature check and hand sanitizer when you enter the restaurant.

A mask case to put your mask in...the hotel provided everyone with another mask to use while dining so that you don't dirty your mask.

Take off the mask to eat...put the mask back on to talk...pretty hard to do

Appetizers...(menu provided at the bottom of this post).
Sashimi...those round white things looked like onions but were daikon!
Loved this! especially the combination of myoga & onion.
Main...the sea bream was cooked perfectly and there were also large pieces of takenoko!
Everyone had beer (s) with their meal but I had a glass of white wine and a glass of sparkling wine.
Lots of food...similar menu to what we have had in the past.

I'm thankful we were all able to get together (hopefully it was a safe gathering too).

Thanks for today MIL!

Appreciate learning about Japanese culture. What does the 49 day gathering signify? Is it always held in a fancy hotel like a wedding reception?

Interesting how they do the mask thing. Too bad it takes a memorial service to enjoy such a fancy meal! Everything looks delicious, and I would definitely eat that white sashimi with the daikon!
With the time to get to the airport and fly down, how long does it take compared to shinkansen? Beautiful view of Fujisan!

Thanks for commenting A reader in California...in Japan, the 49 day service is usually held at a temple, usually the temple that your family's grave is at. Most families eat lunch/dinner together afterwards. In our case, we usually eat lunch together at a hotel nearby afterwards...please look at this post for more info on the significance of the 49 day service. https://katnsatoshiinjapan.blogspot.com/2013/09/49-day-service.html

V, it only took us 1 hour onboard to get from Haneda to Itami...I think it takes about 3 hours by Shinkansen, plus you only get to see Mount Fuji for like 3 seconds, yeah?!

Take care you two.

oh man that was pretty mind-boggling when you described the experience of entering hotel and the mask 'dance' when eating and then not eating. I'm like, look at all those dishes and then the visuals of masks going on or off - yikes!

Rowena, which is why we try not to eat at restaurants...no fun, trying to remember to put the mask back on before talking...plus if others are talking (without their masks on) while you are eating...ugh!

Take care!

I'm glad that you were all able to get together....in spite of the "mask dance"; it looks like a lovely meal Kat!

The first time I got to see Mt. Fuji was from the Shinkansen going to Kyoto. Gave me chills.

Jalna, it is such a treat if you get to see it from the Shinkansen, yeah?!

Take care!
