chisakatta onna

Chisakatta Onna, literally means small woman, the owner threw out her back, so we weren't able to eat here the other week.

Luckily, she is better now and making her curries

Satoshi and I had the fish curry...I had less rice, he had the normal serving of rice...950 yen (tax included) each

We both added spice eggs 100 yen (tax included) each

The curry was super spicy and overpowered the spice egg.

Satoshi was bummed that the egg wasn't "jammy".

I was bummed the egg was served slightly cold.

Each meal comes with this chicken soup.

Each table also has a container of pickled cabbage

Lunch also comes with choice of drink, I had oolong tea while Satoshi had jasmine.

He already wants to come back to try the other curries on the menu...we'll be back.

blue poppy bakery

Had a dentist appointment on Friday...one more appointment left for them to cap the cracked tooth!

They said no eating for 30 minutes after, so instead of waiting around, I went to Blue Poppy Bakery, picked up some things then took the train home

The Caraibe 66% pain au chocolat, good chocolate ratio and loved their croissant...450 yen (tax included)

Bacon pide, first time trying pide, the description on the price card said it was a Turkish cheese bread.

loved how the edges were super crispy! after toasting 460 yen (tax included)
Cheddar cheese biscuit

look at the layers!, super flaky delicious!

460 yen (tax included)

There are so many other items I want to try, I'll be back.

ehomaki

Yesterday was Setsubun, the day before the first day of Spring on the Japanese Lunar Calendar

This year's direction for ehomaki was east-north-east
We purchased our ehomaki from Rakyo, a large futomaki that isn't cut, you can read up on it here

1800 yen (tax included)

This year's ehomaki was disappointing because something in the roll was wet, so it made the nori disintegrate as you were eating it...boo!

I ended up eating it with chopsticks.

I know it was nice to support a small business, and we've ordered from them several years now, but this has made me think twice...dunno if I'll order from Rakyo again.

We also went to check out the festivities for "mamemaki" at Ikegami Honmonji, but left before the crowds came.

Hoping this year will be healthy and happy for everyone.

this and that

Tokyo People, waiting in line for the blood mobile? didn't know it was drive thru...ha!
parking skills...we realized this truck didn't have a side mirror...not sure if it was lost before or after it was parked...
hey! don't take my photo
the tote bag I ordered from the Hanshin Tigers finally arrived...whoo!
Tokyo People...putting in cables

Airing out the glove
Sunday we were "shaken", it was quite loud and a little scary, we were a bit woozy (seasick) afterwards too

noticed these pretty glass lamp covers near Kamata post office
so teeny
so teeny
so teeny
bought us some Kamata onsen t-shirts, a local public bath.

It isn't that close to where we live, but it is still part of our area.

1800 yen (tax included)
apparently a Japanese actress (Nikaido Fumi) was spotted wearing it back in 2019 (photo from the internet)

it got so popular that it is now hard to purchase

glad I was able to get some for us
so teeny..this guy was moving to our building from about 3 houses down the road
Tokyo People...watching the train go by

So, next week, I have a birthday coming up and Satoshi says..."Kat, I'm gonna work from home on your birthday"

I'm like, "what?! no"

Now if he said he was taking off on my birthday, or gonna take me out to lunch, then fine, but just to work from home?! I appreciate the thought but please don’t

Hope you have a safe weekend.

tokyo butaman

Awhile back, Satoshi and I were walking through Jiyugaoka and saw this krazy line for Tokyo Butaman

Then I read something online that the grandchild of 551, recreated the 551 butaman (pork bun) and was selling them under the name Tokyo Butaman

So, I went to check it out...

2 butaman...600 yen (tax included)

6 shumai...680 yen (tax included)

8 amazudango (sweet sour meatballs)...580 yen (tax included)

The shumai was meaty, delicious, though nothing out of the ordinary
The meatballs had a slight char on them and the sauce was goopy but flavorwise delicious, not too sweet

The butaman resembled the one from 551 but there seemed to be butter in the dough making it quite different from the Osaka one.

They also have a black pepper butaman but I felt paying an extra 30 yen for one wasn’t worth it, so I didn’t get it for us to try.

Many people rave that the butaman is exactly the same and that they will no longer need to buy 551 in Osaka.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I'm glad I tried this, but 551 will always be my fave.

beep

Monday, as I was walking home from the market, I was passing in front of the police box

it is nearby a 4-way stop

The car made a hollywood stop and turned right

And just as he did that, the police, flew out from his police box, blowing his whistle, running out into the street, making me freeze from the sound of the whistle (also made me a little deaf for a bit!), and also because he (the police) almost ran into me!

Amazing how slow motion it all was, scared the "beep" out of me too.

Another reason for me to have a camera in my eye...a friend on IG told me about these (ray ban meta) instead

Glad no one got hurt, and I hope the hollywood stop dude got a ticket (didn't stick around to see what happened)

omma foods

We've tried all sorts of items from Omma Foods and recently got to try their Kalbi Jjim, which is beef or pork short ribs that are braised

This was beef but not short ribs and sadly it was salty and not too tender.

The kalbi jjim was actually a bento, so I froze the rice and we ate the hijiki and kiriboshi daikon kim chee with their kimbap

The kimbap, on this day was filled it with gobo (burdock), egg and other veggies..1566 yen (tax included) for everything

It was also Kat's first time trying makgeolli.

This was a probiotic one from Kaldi...298 yen (tax included)

It tasted kind of like a sweetened yogurt with a little kick from the alcohol, dunno if I would get this again, but I'm glad I tried it.

With the start of the new year, have you tried something new to you? Tell me about it in the comments
