hokkyokusei

Hokkyokusei means North Star or Pole Star in Japanese.

In Osaka, it means a place to get delicious omurice.

Omurice is a fried rice enveloped in a fluffy omlette. (omu meaning omlette and rice meaning the fried rice).

The fried rice is usually flavored with ketchup and has some chicken in it. Some places call it chicken rice or ketchup rice.

After the fried rice is enveloped in the fluffy omlette, it is usually topped with some ketchup.

Most places put way too much ketchup, but Hokkyokusei stands above the rest.

For one thing, they make their own ketchup from scratch.

A tomato sauce with slices of carrots, celery flavored with a little worchestershire sauce, maybe even mixing in some demi-glace sauce.

Their fried rice isn't seasoned with ketchup, it is a traditional tasting fried rice.

I ordered the chicken omurice and Satoshi the kinoko (mushroom) omurice...both 690 yen each (about US$6.90).

The omlette is thin and still fluffy...a good balance. Some places have more egg than rice.

The food comes out rather quickly too, so their turnover is quite swift.

You may feel pressured to eat quickly because the line for seats is right behind the counter, and you will feel the eyes...but just take your time and savor your food.

It was our first time eating here, but I can see why their omurice has been popular for over 80 years...it's that good, we'll be back!

This is truly a favorite of mine, I feel like it's a bit Eurasian too. One day my husband Sebastian made this for me, but he used left-over spaghetti to stuff it with, and I really fell in love with it (is that his creation or can you buy it, maybe it's an Kansai thing)?

Homemade ketchup must have been divine, I've been really wanting to make my own BBQ sauce but I can't find liquid smoke here.

Omurice is a great Japanese dish. We usually make it at home with ketchup drizzled on top and fresh parsley, but I've also had it at restauarants with other kinds of sauces like demi-glaze,BBQ and white sauce with cheese. Kat 690 yen seems like a bargain to me for some good omurice.

was good Jalna :)

hope you make it soon K!

I think noodles would be called "omusoba" Elle Marie, I am not sure if it is a Kansai thing...yeah, liquid smoke is kinda obsolete in these parts.

Thanks Kirk! Have a nice weekend too.

Thanks Kris, it definitely was.

White sauce with cheese sounds delicious, J-A!

Hee hee Rowena :)

Ah, you must also come to Osaka then Dennis :)

Take care everyone!

Have tried omurice but don't like it. Still prefer the Chinese/local fried rice. Think it must be the ketchup.

I think you may like this version Nate, it isn't true ketchup that they use.

Take care.

Looks delicious. Eggs and fried rice can there be any other perfect combination?

These omurice looks VERY well made. Egg is still soft and little runny. I love it!

I first heard about omurice in the movie Tampopo, when the little boy requests a rice omelet. I was kind of surprised to see ketchup in Japanese cooking! There's a dorama called Lunch Queen where the restaurant's special recipe is a demi-glace, and that's what they poured over the omurice--which I thought sounded much tastier, I don't like ketchup very much. The ketchup in your photo looks more delicious than regular ketchup.

I still have to see that movie Brian, but LOVED that drama the demi-glace sauce looked so good!

Take care everyone!
