24 hours in enoshima

There have been all sorts of travel discounts for each prefecture, to supposedly help kick start the economy and help out the travel industry.

We wanted to try to travel using the discount, but couldn't get anything on the weekends, so we went to Enoshima on a weekday.

From where we live Enoshima is about an hour by train

The day started out rainy but by the time we arrived, a little after sunset, we could see Mount Fuji’s silhouette.

Satoshi’s been wanting to stay at Iwamotoro since seeing it on a tv show.

Apparently the property used to be a temple and was changed into a ryokan

The baths are very old but beautiful, especially the one they call Roman Bath that has all sorts of stained glass.

The other bath, which is in a cave, was kind of scary.

The woman that would be serving our dinner mentioned that they did not have any convenience stores on Enoshima or vending machines on their property, but if we wanted to go out to purchase our own alcoholic beverages we could do so before dinner.

So we got these two...BUT they are not made locally...boo

This one, which we had just before bed was made locally.

Dinner was an assortment of things...way.too.much.food

During the evening the winds picked up and it sounded like a typhoon.

The next morning before breakfast, we headed up the hill to Enoshima Shrine

It was fun to see the area without tourists all over the place

Breakfast was an assortment of things too...way.too.much

We then checked out and explored the rest of Enoshima

Enoshima candle, is a lookout tower, which you need to pay 500 yen to go up to see.

Lots of pretty tulips were blooming too.

On a day like Wednesday when the winds were krazy, the tower was kinda of swaying...eep!

We then went to check out the Iwaya Caves...admission 500 yen

This was interesting and at the same time kinda scary too

After climbing the stairs back up, my legs were all jelly!

We tried the Meoto manju from Nakamuraya in business since 1902...the brown one was tsubuan (chunky bean paste) while the white one was koshian (smooth bean paste)

The manju is steamed so it is super soft and also not too sweet...130 yen each

We didn't want lunch quite yet, but did want coffee so we went to Loncafe

And ended up ordering french toast

Satoshi had their 2 berry, while I had their chocolate cinnamon

I thought this wasn't worth paying almost $20 per plate for 1 piece of french toast though...

(stained glass inside of Enoshima Daishi)

Before going back to Fujisawa, we went to check out the Enoden train that runs as a light rail on the streets.

There are krazy people who go up to the train! trying to take videos/pictures of it.

We also bought some wagashi from Ogiya, who has a train car in their store!

Imoyokan and Shonan manju...130 yen each

It was a short trip but we did a lot, walked a lot and ate a lot.

Sorry this post was long and rambly, hope you still enjoyed this adventure as much as we did.

abc

Had my 6 month cleaning on Monday.

The dentist said I don't have cavities though my gums are kinda weak so gotta be careful not to make them any weaker...sigh

Anyway...I usually eat at Shake Shack after my dentist visits but since the pandemic I hadn't

So, this time around I finally did.

Their ABC...Avocado Bacon Chicken sandwich....(1298 yen tax included)

Crispy chicken thigh perfectly fried, thick slices of avocado and a slice of apple smoked bacon, pickles and their herb dressing on a sweet bread like bun.

So delicious.

Glad I got to try this and that I was able to eat in.

down the street

Sunday, we went down the street to Denny's for lunch.

I ordered their zero meat "hamburger" salad

The lemon olive oil dressing was good but I wish I could have ordered a different dressing...

Satoshi ordered their hamburger dish that was in an onion soup like thing...it came with rice and for his side dish he ordered this mini chocolate parfait and it also came with the drink bar...

After two glasses I had to stop him from drinking only soda...sigh

After lunch we went to Yogenji...caught the end of the kanzakura (winter blooming cherry blossoms)
Their ginkgo tree was still pretty.
The cutest little Jizo statue.

Up to Myokendo to see their fall colors
Down Myokenzaka

It's supposed to rain tonight so I'm glad we were able to get out and about to see some of the fall colors in our area.

coffee and curry shiki

Saturday, the weather was beautiful.

We ran a few errands and then went in search for lunch, the place we had intended to try was full, so we went to check out Coffee and Curry Shiki, which we had passed by on the way.

What a cozy place!

We both ordered the curry set (1000 yen tax included) which came with consomme soup, salad

And curry with super tender pieces of beef in it.

The curry starts off not too spicy and then the spices creep up on you.

Everyone had acrylic partitions and when we weren't eating were asked to mask up.
Each set comes with coffee or tea, we both chose coffee.
We want to come back to check out other things on their menu.

this and that

Monday and Tuesday it was fahreezing (still is)...was kind of forecast for snow, but it was only really cold rain.

Points if you can see the cat.

This rye bread from Himmel.

When I bought the marron chocolat, they gave me two slices to try...so ono!
Remember Hiroko? well, I found the actual product at Daiso.
Bonne Maman's Chestnut Cream...it was on sale at my favorite market the other day, so I decided it was time to try.

They also have a milk jam (dulce de leche) but it wasn’t on sale.

Apparently this comes from France, only sugar, chestnuts and vanilla.

Now, what to try it on…

Nishikiya Kitchen's Kerala Fish Curry...delicious! slightly spicy love the coconut flavor.

Bummed that Japan soccer lost but proud that they did as well as they did.

Today is the day that Kat has to stay at home all day to literally watch the paint dry.

They are painting the front door?! or somewhere near that and the door needs to be kept open for several hours while the paint dries = someone needs to be at home = Kat...

At least the scaffolding is supposed to start being taken down sometime next week!

Maybe afterwards we can put back the screen doors and my plants can FINALLY go outside!

Hope you are doing well.

Tokyo's numbers are still up.

Have a safe weekend.

reminiscing

One year ago, we remembered we had adopted Mom's apple corer and used it.

Six years ago, we were admiring the yellow ginkgo tree leaves

Ten years ago, I changed the layout of this blog and added my omiyage list

Sixteen years ago, we were exploring Arashiyama at night

Saturday, Satoshi had a dentist appointment and also a tour guide lecture, so I went walking around.

I started at the Tottori Okayama antenna shop near Shinbashi and purchased these rakkyo (pickled scallions)

It’s been awhile since we've had these...sweet type and kim chee type.

Then I walked up towards Ginza, first time to experience all the Christmas decorations

This tree somehow reminded me of Charlie Brown's Christmas (it was next to Hooters...)
This one was next to a pastry shop called Piece Montee (I hope to check out their cakes next time).
Angel Champagne's window display
Thought the Louis Vuitton building was cool looking.

Checked out the Yamagata antenna shop and purchased these two different natto

(we tried the one on the right. both are a larger amount than we usually buy (80 grams each) so we shared.

Also these do not come with karashi (mustard) or sauce so we used our own)

I liked how fresh this was in comparison to the mass made natto we usually buy and not as stinky.

And takuan made with ume syrup, this was a little puckery but delicious!

Couple doors down is the Hiroshima antenna shop where I picked up some of my favorites (nekomame and furikake) and something new, this huge bag of noriten (fried nori) to try.
Then down a couple of streets to the Ibaraki antenna shop for some hoshiimo (dried sweet potato) and yakiguri (roasted chestnuts)

The yakiguri was smokey delicious, meaty and sweet.
Beautiful Sasanqua tree on the corner of Babasaki and Sotobori Avenues
Looking down Babasaki Avenue
The tree in the lobby at Pacific Century Place, was decorated with what looked like colored baby's breath...

And burritos for our lunch from Frijoles which Twitter friend Andy told me about.

The set up is similar to Subway, cafeteria style where you go through the different items and they put it into your burrito, taco, rice bowl or salad...

I got the chicken, Satoshi wanted beef, I also put in the rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, cheese, sour cream, avocado and lettuce in both our burritos.

I would definitely go back here and they also have several shops around Tokyo too...Thanks Andy!

There were definitely a lot of people out and about and the temperature was kind of fahreezing...

I hope to check out more (new to me) antenna shops in the future.
