my kaki plant still hasn't fruited though it seems that all the seeds I planted have sprouted.
There is some kind of hard shelled black bug that literally covers the stem (trunk) so I've been trying to figure out what they are and how to get rid of them. yuck

V, how long have you had your kaki plant, I looked online and it said it takes about 8 years to fruit. Hope the bugs aren't those kabutomushi, I heard they are hard to get rid of.

My plants are about 4-5 years old but since they are in a large planter, the tallest is only about 3 feet.
The bugs on the stems/trunks are smaller than ladybugs and completely wrap the trunk. I tired scraping them off but they're really stuck on so I've been spraying some insecticide that's supposed to be ok for edible types. It seems to help a little.
These Kabutomushi looks like the coconut rhinocerous beetles that have been spreading through the islands. There are traps hanging all over trying to keep track of the infestation since they well devastate the coconut trees. Sad.

V, those coconut rhino beetles cost big money here! people keep them as pets?! here.
